I stumbled upon a 356 engine for sale, and it would be really tempting to put it into my '56 ghia. I'm normally a 'keep it stock' kinda guy, but this is intruiging.

First off, what should I be looking out for on a 356 engine? The engine is out of the car, but 'it ran when it was pulled,' of course - don't they all?

I have a rig to start a VW engine on the ground - will it work on the 356 engine?

What else is involved in adapting the 356 engine to the VW transaxle - mine has already been converted to a tunnel case.

should be the same as far as the vw adaptation goes,as long as its not a 912 12volt motor (clutch and flywheel are bigger/different).i say plug it in the ghia, many dealers installed upon request 356 porsche motors,i have the paperwork to prove it,they started doing it in 58,and they did it to all the vw variants of the era,i had a 58 ghia with a dealer installed 356 motor had an okrasa tach and several other cool oddities
