whats up with these heads?

april of 61 t1 engine....

VW Vet Fri Jun 01, 2007 5:02 pm

ivsamhell,

If you have access to the engine in your post, remove the valve covers and take some pictures like those of the heads earlier in this thread.
Knowing the inside diameter of the combustion chambers would help discover "what's up with these heads".

I have found 4 of these valve covers in my garage. It is hard to believe as Australia didnt have many of these bastard motors. Could they be something else- Any one got some comparitve photos- Ie comparrison of 36 horse, bastard motor, 40 horse, 1300 1500 1600 etc. I started searching but did not come up with anything where they were in the same photo. Had too many matches too come up with anything good

OK here is my collection of bastard parts

I have had the motor for 7 years and the before that It was pulled from a Manx buggy and was running when the 1600 was put in that. When it was pulled it sat under a bench for 10 years it still spins. Some day I might take it appart

I once owned an early 60 beetle with the basatrd. Drove it from Mississipi to Maryland straight through (short naps in truck stops). Had to draft semis to get up the steep hills, jump into the passing lane & floor it to build up speed for the next one. Why that thing never blew, I'lll never know because I had it wound out the whole trip. White nuckles all the way. The bastard is stronger than its reputation.

tommy-turtle,

Remove the flywheel and take a well focused picture of the end of the crank. This will reveal if it is a "true bastard" engine. Also, pop a valve cover off and take a picture of the rocker box. Your picture of the serial number is a little unclear. What is the serial number?

66uno,
The bastard engine ran very well until the crank broke. Yours was probably a bastard with a modified crank, flywheel, and case, or a second generation bastard. Both would have had the thrust bearing at #1 main instead of the weaker location at #2 main.

Bruce wrote: I found these oddball main bearings at a swap meet last summer. Only recently did I discover them to be Bastard 40hp bearings. Since they are steel backed and 65mm OD, they must be the 3rd Generation Bastard Crankcase bearings VW Vet describes above. All my measurements suggest they will work in all 40hp and 1300, 1500, 1600 engines.

Can anyone explain why they are all split?

Bruce I believe these were all split type bearings because VW engineering thought installing a dowel pin on both sides of bearing would would lessen the chances of a spun bearing in the cold climates..

i have a 40 horse with what aparently is a bastard head on 1 side.
i see the rocker studs on the other side, so they looklikr long studs. is there anyway to confirm if this head has been converted to the short versions? there was a head on page 3 of this thread that looks like it has long studs but was mentioned having been converted. i need to make sure what i have to adjust the valves properly.

If you can see the studs on the back side of the head, extending into the lower part of the head, they must be long studs. When people convert to short studs, the long ones come out. Take a close look at your head. Post a picture if you can get a good one (rocker box with cover off, and the studs where they go from the upper head to the lower head).

I looked at more of your photos.
Sorry, not a Bastard engine. The heads are distant relatives of the Bastard era. They are likely from the 2nd or 3rd generation era. The rocker shaft mounts are not like any I have seen from the time period in question. If you ever take the case apart, take pictures like the ones on the first page of this thread.
Some one here can tell you what the 'X' means. I will guess it's hand stamped replacement engine number.

Bastard valve covers?

VW Vet Sun Jul 06, 2008 3:15 pm

Yes, but they were still issued for a while after the Bastard era for generations 2 & 3 heads. See previous pages of this thread.

I think it is 1200cc 40 hp
28pict carb
no bearings on camshaft...pre 1970 I think

Hi all,

I just acquired a 40 hp "Bastard" long block motor. Block number #3467872, has the heads with the screw-on metal covers over the small chamber above the rocker box area (I imagine it has the vent hole from the chamber to the rocker box). I got it from Kent Z. here in St. Louis for my June '59 Double Door Panel bus, although I'm not sure if I'll ever bolt it in. I have a '61 40 hp motor in there now and I just wanted to obtain the correct "Bastard" engine that would have been in there. I already had the correct carb and fuel pump, but now I'll need to hunt down the missing upper L & R side cylinder tins, the correct distributor (the long block currently has a ZV/PAU 4 R 5 distributor) (what's correct?), the bus air cleaner with "slots" does it screw on or clamp on?), and a gasket set for the Bastard motor. I'd love to hear from anyone who has any of that stuff laying around for sale so I can complete this engine.

After I clean it up a little (oily and dirty), I'll try to shoot some photos and (if I can figure out how to down-size and post 'em) I'll send some photos to this thread. Other than the early case #, what obvious differences should be visible on the outside of a "Bastard" case that was later changed/improved. Also, what should the detachable generator tower look like?

Thanks for any answers, photos and assistance with my missing parts!

Bill Bowman
