The wingnut is correct. That type of air cleaner can be clearly seen in the April 1953 Tom McCahill roadtest of the '53 Volkswagen in Mechannix Illustrated magazine.

Hello SAMBA!

Newbie to the board here, but a long time lurker. Long-time VW enthusiast. My daily driver for 8 years was a 1776 '56 oval...it'd been cross-country 3 times and survived 2 blizzards, a hurricane, and earthquake only to be totaled in a head-on collision...gas heaters were a great idea until something like this happens!! I've been out of the scene for awhile doing the hot rod thing, 1927 Ford roadster and now a 1929 Ford truck. The VW 'bug'...no pun intended...well maybe...has been nagging me again. I've got a March of '53 standard zwitter sitting in storage just wanting to get out. Pretty rare car, from what i understand  It's in pretty rough shape, but luckily has all of the 'trim' stuff...correct steering wheel, door handles & window cranks, etc for a canada standard from what i can gather.

Thanks to all of the guru's on the forum who share their wealth of knowledge here...it has helped me out alot and is the best gathering of vw minds i have found!

How important is it to have matching numbers from body to your pan for early model splits?

eurodub Sun Aug 31, 2008 2:51 pm

it's like having a car made of parts..

it depends of what you're looking for a split: daily driver? show car? mild resto? just don't care as long as it's a split? etc...

a valuable car has both the pan and the body as matching numbers. the engine is more difficult to have as matching, and wolfsburg museum sometimes does not have in it's database the engine number to refer to. but you can search in the chassis number section on thesamba and find if the engine is the same month as your car's pan and body to see if it's the matching # one.

later edit: a very early split is valuable whether it's a pan or a body... i'm sure a 45 body is valuable even on a later split chassis.

Hi I recently aquired my Dads 1951 VW type 1. Its not stock, the engine and tranny are from a 1967, 12vlt and I believe the taillights are from a 1952. I grew up driving Bugs and its great to be drving one again.

Welcome to The Samba. Please post some more pics of it. Looks clean. How long has it been in the family?

My Dad bought in the mid-late 80's from a guy from Mass. He had the floors replaced and got some missing interior items (dimple shift knob, ashtrays etc) It hasn't been driven in several years, just garaged.
I have been driving everyday and I LOVE it!! We are going to have a new paint job, she has a couple of dents and small spots that need to be repaired and get a nice interior, the seats and door panels are good but not carpeting. I keep reading about VW birth certificates, how do you get one? I would love to see what color she was originally.
They are going to sell his 1953 split too, it has had body off restoration and is not modified like mine.

Thanks! My chickens and turkeys (TG dinners) are free range during the day and very curious about the new car, well anything different.
