I have been driving everyday and I LOVE it!! We are going to have a new paint job, she has a couple of dents and small spots that need to be repaired and get a nice interior, the seats and door panels are good but not carpeting. I keep reading about VW birth certificates, how do you get one? I would love to see what color she was originally.
They are going to sell his 1953 split too, it has had body off restoration and is not modified like mine.

It looks like a nice driver. Change the taillights and bumpers and your in businiess.

Hi
You said to change the bumpers and tail lights but what should I be looking for? The last time I drove an air cooled the internet wasn't a part of everyday life. So if ld show me what me I should be looking for. I know my car won't be stock, I would like it to kinda there, semi-stock??
I would love to know what to replace them with (I will keep the "extra" tail lights though, people don't see lights!)
Also, when my brother was getting her together for me, he changed out the bumpers, what do '51 bumpers look like?

Oh, I think I remember that car and your Dad Lora. I think I drove up there to look at some floor pans he was selling a few years back. I remember the white split.

Bumpers and taillights for that car won't be cheap (the correct ones), but those heart lights on there now are worth some $$ as well. You might be able to find someone to trade you for the correct lights.

Decent repro ribbed bumpers are available, but don't go expecting the mid 60s parts prices....

They are downsizing again so they sold me the '51 and are selling the '53 too. You might have seen that one too.
Having the wrong bumpers is why I have such a hard time opening and closing the engine compartment lid! I will start my search for the right bumpers and tail lights. Thanks again!

Here are the repro bumpers,
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=389457
and the repro rear lights, you can buy them with turn signals with dual filaments
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=164249
and if you really want something that sticks out so people can see you stop and will notice you add one of these.

Have you seen the 53 split John? I'd be interested in purchasing it Lora if you could send me some pictures of it please. After having a look I can make you an offer, and see what you think.

It turns out my Dad has a set of 1951 tail lights and the 1953 split is a 1952 Zwitter. Now if I can convince him to give me the tail lights for Christmas!!

DMNCLNR Mon Sep 22, 2008 8:41 pm

What is the story on it?

"Purchased this on 9-11-2008. Built in June of 1950, and imported into the US in 1959 or 1960. It then moved to OK in 1969 where it was parked in 1975 until I purchased it. The original motor is in the car! Still researching..."

Found this thing on Craigslist if you can believe that! In Oklahoma near the border of Kansas. When I finally made it there the guy tells me that he must have recieved a million phone calls inquiring about the car. He said he had a couple of guys that were very very persistent! It was just my time I guess.
