Hi folks.
I scored a 914 shortblock and would like to know if I should/can use this in my 74 Westy rebuild project, or should stick to the stock 1.8L case/internals.
Anyhow, I did some some searching for info, & couldn't determine the case I have. The # is EC0C1511, stamped diagonally on the left front top case half. It almost looks like a 'o' after the last digit, but I think it's just a machining mark on the case? The reason I'm confused is - shouldn't a 914 have EC76 as the first markings?
From what I found, it could be a 74 or 75 914 1.8L, is this correct?
I thought I'd post this here rather than the Bay forum as I might get more 914-specific info here. Any insight is much-appreciated.
Thanks! |

914 1.8L or 412 case. How is the dipstick mounted? next to the oil breather tower with a small metal tube?
You can use this case in your bus with no problems but you will have to add oil thru the oil breather/filler and check the oil from the top. It hasn't the mech fuel pump machined either.
Crank and rods are the same as with all 1.7L/1.8L engines. The heads are with nice 41x34 valves and good chambers and usually not cooked like bus heads. |

Good to know, thanks!
**edit** from here: http://www.vwtype3and4club.org.uk/_docs/type4/t4chengnos.htm
it does appear to be a 412 shortblock. Well how about that? :?
Yes, the dipstick is mounted on top next to the breather tower unlike the 1.8L in the Westy. Neither the dipstick or need for electric fuel pump are major issues to me if the shortblock is a solid core for a good rebuild, especially with the rising price of type IV parts! Yikes!
I was told it was a 914, and got it for next to nothing. I don't have my Wilson book in front of me, so I couldn't confirm this until tomorrow.
I wish I had the heads, but it's just a short block. I haven't torn it apart to check the internals, but at least this gives me options for using this crank/rod set or the ones 74 Westy 1.8L, depending on how things check out from the machine shop. |
