Oh yes there is.

Here's a hint for you. The difference cannot be unbolted and changed.

Probably true, but not the major difference I'm looking for.

That leaves only the apron.

What about the roof?

mnussbau Sun Aug 31, 2008 6:54 pm

You're enjoying this WAAAY too much...

Why would the roof be any different at the rear?

Bruce Sun Aug 31, 2008 6:56 pm

Oh ya! :D
Why? I've been asking that myself for the last year since I noticed this.

Glenn Sun Aug 31, 2008 6:59 pm

I checked the micro fiche and they do have different part numbers. But that's because the cowl at the front window is part of the roof.

OK... spill it.

Bruce Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:01 pm

Yer gettin' close, Glenn. Think about the extent of the roof pressing.

It's at the rear. Your line drawing won't show it. Refer back to the photos.

The rain gutter is longer?

Might be, but that is not as blatently obvious as the difference I am looking for.

mnussbau Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:19 pm

One has more cooling slots under the window!! Standard beetle: 50. Super: 42. HOLY CRAP!

Bruce Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:21 pm

GIVE THAT MAN A CIGAR!!!

Bruce Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:23 pm

The next question is, why?

Glenn Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:27 pm

Doesn't make sense.

mnussbau Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:30 pm

I don't smoke, so just throw money!

I'd guess there must be a quality or cost reason. There being a new roof stamping to design, VW took the opportunity to put in fewer slots...it was either easier/cheaper to make the new dies or they decided there would be fewer production problems. Another possibility is the total area open to the air is a bit more on the super.

edit: It's got to be the total open area...fewer slots=fewer vertical members. If the width of the verticals is the same between standards and supers you get more open area in the same space.

Glenn Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:33 pm

Now is that true for a 1303 and 1303? Or does the 1302 also have 50 slots?

Now explain what that has to do with lowering the rear.
