I'm looking for a source for a support ring that is located in the Steering Column.

If you have a Bentley Manual, it is shown on Page 22 of Chapter 2 in Figure 9-12. This is the part that goes between the spring and the steering column bearing.

I've checked most of the places I'm aware of(Bus Depot, Bus Boys,etc) but have been unable to locate one. Is this a part that cannot be purchased new?

Your sig says you have a 73 bus?

If yes, the column pictured in figure 9-12 on page 27 of the 68-79 Bentley is a 68-71?. Look at the turn signal mount.

Your 73 should use this style of turn signal switch:

is close to yours but is from vin 214 2164 060. It uses the later style steering wheel. #36 is called a thrust ring and is part number 211 415 589C.

Your 72? to early 74 column uses a thrust ring also, but it is part number 113 415 589A.

Only the column pictured in the Bentley shows it as 'support ring'.

Neither of the 2 part numbers I listed are available new anymore.

Yes, mine is a '73 and my turn signal swithc does look like the one pictured. I thought I had the right figure but I'll take another look this eveniing.

Is it a steel ring about 1" in diameter, split at 12 o clock, three halfmoon cutouts at 3, 6, and 9 o clock? With the cross-section shaped like an "L"?

Karl - According to mine Bentley it says the figure is for Steering Columns '68 - '74. I have the edition published in 1979. Maybe ours are different editions.

steponmebbbboom - I'm not real sure, as when I took everything apart it was in 4 pieces.I'll have to check my screws and bolts box in the bus in a few minutes and see if I still have the pieces.

Update: I must have thrown the pieces away.

well Im willing to bet it's the one you need, It came out of a '74.

I'm taking apart my steering and just found the "support ring" in pieces... it is the one (per Bently diagram 9-12) which goes just below the spring. Anyone have an idea if this is available anywhere or do I need to find a junkyard?

are we talking part number 36 in the diagram. If so used ones is all you will find. If you need it asap contact Ken Madsen at BUSCO or Chris at Busted Bus and they can get you one. I just got some parts from Ken a few days ago.

hmm it shows as part number 2 in the diagram I have.. page 27, diagram 9-12 Circular ring with an inverted L shape cross section and there is a small notch making it about 340 out of 360 degrees in total.

Wondering if anyone thinks that spot welding it and then grinding it would work well.

Herrfink - since you don't post what year you are working on it is really hard to give you the right image. Buy a used one if you want it right. The one on the late bay is spring steel so if the early one is also and you weld it, then you will have to heat treat it again.

Thanks! Sorry I just updated my signature to include my first ever VW project. in case it doesn't show up.. it is a 1971 pop top camper first registered in California in 1970 with original plates and been registered in California ever since.

Does anyone happen to have a photo of this support ring (AKA thrust ring, part # 113 415 589A, for early bays)? Is it plastic or metal? My column has a lot of play so I am guessing mine is missing. I'd like to track one down in my parts stash before I pull my wheel but I can't tell from the exploded parts diagram what it really looks like.
