I bought this about a year ago. 25K original miles, undocumented. I bought it from a Gent in NC. The car was originaly from Franklin, NY I believe.

It's been resprayed, but has the original interior. It's extremely solid and untouched from what I can tell.

I need to send for the birth cert. sometime. Just wondering if anyone has ever seen this car, in any shape or form. All #s match BTW. The doors, hood, deck lid all close perfectly, etc. The motor is original, and runs perfectly.

Thanks,

Rob

Wonderful car! ~20 years ago I remember a similarly-colored all original (incl. paint!) Beetle owned by a VW enthusiast in NY, it being shown at a VW meet at Howard Holmes VW in Elmsford NY (near the TZ Bridge). Back then, that car had the correct slotted trim rings in the wheels, and a tiny dent in the side panel just above the left rear fender. I don't know what happened to that one, though.

Yes:

If I recall, there was a short write up and photo essay of the car in either Trends or HVW's a few years back.. I can't remember, it was short and maybe at best one page and a half. "Oval Special Issue" seems to ring a bell.

Very, VERY, >>VERY<< nice car indeed, I really, really like nice original "preservation vehicles" Truly the finest of the finest to have is an original car. restorations are nice, but even the best never feel and look the same as a Woflsburg built car. And the same goes for all makes.

Thanks for the photos.

Hey, thanks guys. The guy I bought it from said that the car was repainted with Spies Hecker paint, and that a rep from SH actually oversaw the job. Maybe that will ring a bell. Neat about the magazine article. If anyone comes across it, please let me know what magazine, and what issue. Thanks for the replies.

There was a silver oval in New York and a silver oval in North Carolina. Both of these cars were low mileage ovals. Since I live in Virginia.......I tried to buy both of these cars but didn't act fast enough. I told the guy I would come to North Carolina the same day he posted the ad but then he started a bidding process. Wasn't the North Carolina oval $7,000? The New York oval was posted on www.ep.com Wasn't that the old VW classified site? it's been years. I believe the owner from North Carolina was a realtor.

Steven, yes he is a realtor. Same car! Good info.

I wonder if the NY car and the NC car are one in the same?

I hear of another low mileage Polar Silver car on the West coast, owned by someone with lots O money? Different car though.

7K? It was offered on this site for 12K. I ended up buying it direct from the seller, he delisted the auction and then I bought it.

Thanks for the information. Keep it coming if you have anything to add.

Thanks!

Also, Polar Silver looks more green than silver, I would say.

It's a fantastic color. I think that the pictures of the car are pretty accurate colorwise.

The actual color is more on the grey/green side than the grey/silver side. Some of you guys know this color.

Your car was actually listed twice here on the samba. I'm almost 100% sure it was $7K and I emailed and told him I'd come and get it ASAP, so did everyone else  a year or so went by and it came up for sale again, still in North Carolina and I was so disguisted by what he did...I didn't email that time.
I believe the other oval was from Long Island and was stored in a warehouse. I believe the guys name was John. I called him and he was very picky, he said that he wouldn't sell it to anyone that would customize it. That was atleast 6 to 7 years ago. Atleast it has a good home now.

Humm. That's interesting. I know that I had a # of converstions with the seller, back last August, and he was definately shopping for the appropriate buyer.

He remarked that he had talked to someone in Hawaii, and the guy mentioned customizing the car.

No way would he sell it to that person, he said.

The seller had a few cars, and had recently become interested in the next level, Porche. He needed to clean out the "barn".

I think that back then, when you E-mailed him, he may have just been putting out a feeler on the car? And maybe that's why he never responded to anybody? Or did he? What made you so disgusted?

So if it's the same car, why would it have been in a warehouse on Long Island, and how did it get from LI to North Carolina..

I have a letter that I got from the prior owner. The prior, prior owner, out of Franklin,NY, Zip 13775, asking for a birth certificate. Here is the jist of the letter back from VW:

The reply from VW, dated 7/30/99, was: "unable to furnish info, the old microfiche is old and fragile, and already unreadable through overuse"

I'm still trying to find out the older history on the car. Thanks for reading.

BTW, no, I have not sent snail mail to the old Franklin,NY address. But Internet searches turn up nothing for the name that I have.

But I will try that soon, and also retry the birth certificate, as I think VW now has it all digitalized.

When the realator had it for sale the first time, it was for sale but when everyone emailed him, his realator side came out and it went to the highest bidder. I don't think the highest bidder came through and I actually emailed him and asked what the highest bid was, I don't remember what it was. That is what made me mad. Then a year or so go by and the car is back on the samba and I guess that is when you bought it. It could be the very same car. It could of made it's way down to North Carolina.
