Just when I think I know everything ... I am delightfully surprised that something has eluded my brain for years, maybe decades.

Today I just learned there was such a thing as a Fridolin. What is it? Where do they come from? How can I get one?

And to think I had a dream and was going to make one by fusing a Type-3 and a Bay Window ... !!!

I've just being doing some external Google research.
And now I know for sure that I want to have one ... it's exactly what I have been thinking about.

You know how it goes: you're sitting in traffic, inside your Bay Window, and you're thinking: "you know, what I really need is something like ..." and you get all these elaborate plans.

Seems like I was dreaming of a Fridolin the whole time.

Bet I could jam a 2 litre engine in there just for kicks.
Or maybe a Porsche engine ... that's the ticket.

What type powerplant do they have? Are they closer to a type3 or type1?

factory fit was a 1300 same as a beetle. but there are a few non-standard frids around. :wink:

So do most put in a Hi-Po type 1 or a type 3? Just wondering. Happened upon some pics here and weird thing is I always thought the new mail trucks would look sweet done up and now I see the VW makes the same damn thing!
Also what type beam do they run/. Seeing as how the front sheetmetal looks type3ish does that mean they are running type 3 beams?

Just for shits and giggles, how much should a guy expect to pay for a frid in drivable condition? No bells and whistles, just something that moves down the road with no major structural problems

Actually, standard fit was a 1200cc.

Type 1 ball joint beam. There's nothing type3 about the frid at all.

edit - Except the '65 Fridolin....that used the K&L beam and had the wide 5 stud wheels.

All fridolins were hand built by westphalia for Vw for mainly the German and Swiss post offices . 6120 i believe in total . None of the body parts are interchangable with ANY of the Vw range except the engine lid which is 67 split only and the floors that are from a karmann ghia . The front bumpers are frid Typ 147 only the rears are 67 split bumpers cut in half and narrowed 4 inches . They all came with a standard factory 1200cc engine and gearbox and typ 1 bug front suspension drums Not discs . Production was from 1964 to 1974 only .

Price they sell outta germany as a total restoration project for £ 3500 GBP around $7000 but one has just been sold in this country and its fully running and driving for £ 7000 GBP $14000usd at todays exchange rate
