If you're thinking of taking your Ghia onto The Salt in 2012 or you just want to keep abreast of what's going on I suggest you contact Burly (36hplandspeedracer) and get you name added to his emailing list.

If you're wavering this might just be the video that persuades you to start making serious plans for next September. This is an excellent 12 minute video of Greg Silkenson's Bonneville Adventure shot and edited by Greg's co-pilot Duncan Charlton...it comes to you via YouTube and Burly's emailing list of course.

Congrats Greg and Duncan an excellent video of the sights and sounds of September's Bonneville "World of Speed."

Thanks John! And it was a pleasure to talk to you.
A dream come true for me to drive on the Salt Flats! I'm really pleased with the video, Duncan did a great job. I hope it encourages others to give it a try too. Greg

Great video

I get to caught up in the car prep to remember to turn either one of the two gopros on. Maybe we can get some shots from Wilmington Mile in April in Agent Orange.

Currently rebuilding the motor we dropped a valve in at Speed Week. New rings and head studs. New valves, springs, and retainers. Fixed the head and the valve seat and guides.

143.75mph was the 2-1/4 mile speed we got just before the ghia fell on its face at speed week. could have been a 150mph pass thru the 3mile if it had held together.

Burly, you should try to get out to OH for the first event at the new ECTA site.

Zach, as much as I would like to, my plans are to spend whatever money I can rustle up to go to Australia in March and attend the DRLA Speedweek down under. It is a bucket list type thing.

That being said, I will try to get to Wilmington, Ohio, and the new ECTA events as soon as I can. May be awhile though as going to OZ will drain the coffers.

Please say hi to all of the family for me.........................

Hmm, Wilmington, Ohio. That's only a 4 hour drive for me... it might be interesting to go and observe.

I'm sure the Burns clan and myself at least will be running in the 150 club or higher this year. I'm building a 3 year car with the goal of getting a 200 mph Hat. I ran 144 mph in less than a mile ( GPS verified for what that's worth) in the standing mile. With a slightly modified engine from last year we are hoping for 165 mph or so in the 150 mph club. I hope to make 1 pass under 160 and then go for broke this time. This year will be a learning and research time to gather data to reach the ultimate goal. I'm looking forward to some serious competition from the Burns clan and some more Speed Freaks in 2012.

Remember Britt, if you run in the USFRA 150 Club events (these are totally different than the SCTA/BNI "F" Classic classes), you cannot go above 159.999 mph. If you exceed that speed in the 150 Club, you will not be given your speed and you will forfeit all further runs.

Likewise. running 155 in the F Classes will not get you into the 150 Club since they are from two totally different sanctioning bodies. Just a heads up.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas tomorrow. Tootloo.....

I understand and I don't care about 150 club membership at this point( Who knows I may change my mind on the day). I said last year I didn't want run for just entry into the 150 club, not worth it to me. This is a jumping off point. I believe that 6 mph in an additional 1.25 miles even with last years car and engine would have been no problem. As the goal in the long run is to break the 200 mph barrier if I break out in the 150 class then OK, we'll have 2 drivers again this year, maybe the other guy wants to become a member of the 150 club. The car will be built with this goal in mind, first thing will be the roll cage, taking advice from Bob Sthal on this item. This year we'll use last years engine warmed up a bit, next year with the knowledge we gain from this years passes we'll decide what engine to build for 2013. I can only fund so much and ask Matt and Geoff for 1 miracle a year. That's why i said I'd run 1 150 mph run and then give it all she's got for the second run. Maybe we'll run in 2 classes this year, or more..... Thanks for the heads up kind sir, merry Christmas from the Emerald Isle!

The ghia in the video: that looked like a smooth ride. The Salt Flats help.

silkvw Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:36 am

Part of the drivers meeting on the first day was to slowly drive the one mile course and look for the best "line". When I went to watch at Bonneville in '07, they moved the course over 50 feet or so when soft spots were causing a problem. My Ghia did feel stable at 100 mph. I hope to see how it feels at 130 mph some day! Greg

A fellow building a mid Subaru engine street Ghia inquired today about Ghia aerodynamics. I refferred him to this link:

http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=136778&start=75 Shop Talk Forum on VW Beetle aerodynamics. A must read for VW bug and Ghia land speed racers.

along with photos of some F-a-s-t Bonneville Ghias. Since I had tthem out I thought I would post them here for others to view.Enjoy.....................

All photos by Burly Burlile

All these Ghias have been to speeds between 125 and 167 miles per hour with the green #57 Ghia of Larry Monreal hitting 167 with his air cooled Big Block VW.

Do they give you any ideas?

Thanks for the Ghia pictures Burly I really enjoyed them. I also remember the Opel GT front end on the Ghia from years ago. Yes I've decided to look into window safety devices now.
