"Egg" taillights are unique to bugs sold in the U.S., Canada and Guam. If yours was originally sold somewhere else, it will have the heart lights with orange heart lenses.

Built when in 54? If your car is a UK car, then yes, it should have hearts.

It only gets egg lights if its chassis number is 1-0722916 or higher.

You'll have to check where you car was made for Egg vs. Hearts. Weren't Egg Lights used only for the US Market cars?

As stated previously, US, Guam & Canadian imports all came with eggs from November 1954- early April 1955

That's interesting. I didn't know Canada got them as well as the US.

Quote: These were used on Beetles built between Sept 1954 & March 1955 destined for the US market.

I think it is fair to say that it is uncertain when the change actually took place. There are a few odd cars out there.

Snowflakes with bullets were optional only in April 55. Eggs were still standard equipment in April 55. In May 55, the conversion to snowflakes on all cars sold in the US, Guam and Canada was complete.

If you read enough literature/publications on the subject, it can become certain when the change actually took place. First car to recieve the first change-over from the egg light was Chassis #1-0871207 (mid April 1955).

871207 was built in May 1955, not April. As per my post above, snowflakes were standard in MAY.

Hello:

I would have to agree that you should check the VIN for the build date and set it up with the right lights. I think both the "Egg" and "Heart" lights are very cool and I have had cars with both and I still have a early 55 with "eggs". For some time the "Heart" lights were all the rage, "cool'.. But it seems nobody wanted the "egg" lights and thus they have become somewhat of a extreme-rarity and the correct late 54-early 55 is something of a wonder. like a "split-window-63 Stingray..vette" and the "Zwitter".. So being set up as correct for your car is best I would think. Enjoy the Olde Heffer! :D
