I have a 56 on an IRS pan. the PO switched out the steering column and wheel with a GT wheel and a locking steering column. somebody at the Bugorama swap meet last memorial wknd graciously donated an original 56 steering wheel.

To switch out from this later column to an early one, would i need to replace the steering box as well? or are these interchangeable? Also, my front beam is a ball bearing, not link. will this cause any fitment problems? i wouldn't think so, but you can never be too sure.. every project bleeds into the next.

Thanks!

You can keep the steering box you currently have fitted. It'll work. But you'll need to install a steering column tube, steering column shaft steering wheel bushing & the turn signal switch from a Pre '59 beetle to use the Pre '56 steering wheel.

I think you mean Ball joint. Anyway, no it won't cause any fitament issues.

er, yeah. Ball Joint. hehe. Wow, this means i have a bit of collecting to do in order to get the wheel on. Guess i'll keep that as a long term project. thanks!
