I have recently purchased a 1970 Beetle autostick. It had the transmission, but no engine. I'm wondering what type of engine came in these and what type to put in. I know the stuff that needs to be changed (added) to work with an autostick, but I can't find anything on what type of engine

I also have a 70 autostick, it came with a 1600 single port.
Make sure you have the right oil pump.

IMO you should quit while your ahead, stick a manual in it and never look back... if you need info on that conversion let us know... we can help.

keifernet.............
Send me some info on the auto to 4-speed conversion. Once I complete the body work, I am considering a 4 speed instead of the autostick. rossmda@hotmail.com
I can give you another email address once I get an email or something.

I just bought a 72 autostick. I'm loving it so far. I mean, I understand the desire and advantage of a manual, but having an autostick is actually pretty useful for me. My fiance can't drive a manual for medical reasons. The previous owner had it for 5 years and never had a single issue with the transmission.

If it is all together and working good then yeah, they are nice for some folks, just make sure you keep your hand off the shifter unless your making a gear change ( taht's the thing that always drove me nuts!)
and make sure you get the right person to work on it if it gives you trouble...

I have a blast driving around in my 70 autostick, and when people look in and see 2 pedals they look all confused.....even better when they are going for a ride and see me shifting and not pushing in a clutch. They ask what is the deal, and I tell them, ever since the accident, and loosing my left leg to a run away moped, I can't push in a clutch with a prosthetic leg. LMAO :)

Great idea rossmda!

Yeah, it took me a couple of days to figure out that I have to let go of the stick after shifting. Once I got that straight in my head it has driven like a dream. Of course the power off the starting line is a little low, but I don't mind. My fiance, can't drive a stick for medical reasons, so this was a great compromise car for us.

I was out tonight in the autostick and it wouldn't go into gear, I was getting real p$$ed off. Come to find out it blew a fuse in the engine compartment, once I replaced the fuese, it went right into gear and off I went

The Bentley manual has a beautiful section on automatic stick shift, complete with wiring diagrams. In my humble opinion, ain't a damn thing wrong with an autostick. I'd only replace it with a manual a) if you really want to, or b) if your trans is totally trashed and you can't find a replacement. In 25 yrs of dealing with Automatic Stick Shifts (On Porsches they're called "Sportomatic", on Mercedes- Benz "Hydrak"), I've found the VW version to be the best- PERIOD. The four most common problems with Autosticks are as follows: 1) Ignorant Drivers. 2) Ignorant Drivers. 3) Ignorant "Technicians". 4) Electrical problems. Just my two Deutscmarks worth... Crap! I forgot... DMs arent worth anything now....
