My uncle and I were talking about the supreme baja the other day and wondered if we could somehow mate a 1300 or so class bullet bike engine {and trans} to a vw baja. This would give 200+ hp and the 6 speed trans? Please tell if this is possible? If it could be done? And if there is any reason to go to the trouble?

Does your uncle smoke funny smelling cigarrettes?

It's been done, but not in a VW or using a VW transaxle. The main drawback is the extreme lack of torque. Those motors are meant to haul several hundred pounds off the line, not several thousand (give or take a few hundred) :)
Unless you want to engineer something completely different, and go through the hassle of fabbing a motor/tranny connection, give this one a pass.

Good one Bob :D
Thanks I needed that....

It's one of those things that sounds good but isn't very practical. The horsepower and tranny sound good until you look at the Torque and the RPM. You would be shifting so much it would be like peddling a bike.

I did see a felow out of Utah who ran a turbo snowmobile engine in a rail with a sedan tranny and one of those variable clutches.

He basicaly would put the tranny in a specific gear and attack the hill letting the belt clutch do all the work.

One other fine point on your six speed motorcycle tranny is that it and the clutch where not designed to haul two thousand pounds around bumpy jerky terrain with 29 inch tires.
