My '89 Jetta GL tends to stall when my foot comes off the accelerator. Not every time, but about 75% of the time. Problem began about 6 months ago, and it's worse when the engine is cold or when the A/C is operating. Even when it doesn't stall, the RPMs drop to near zero, and the engine stumbles to regain a steady idle. I have checked all vacuum hoses; all are conncted but I can't tell if there are any leaks. I have two marginal service manuals (Haynes and Chilton) and neither have shed any light on this problem. I can still drive my Jetta, but it is driving me nuts! Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

The easiest way to check for a vacuum leak is to use a can of carb cleaner. Just use the nozzle and spray the hoses, intake, etc. Go slow, you dont have to soak it, just get enough around the lines so the vacuum will pull the cleaner into any holes/cracks and cause the engine to pick up. when your engine picks up thats where the leak is. Your prob definately sounds like a vacuum/choke issue. Either way start with the carb cleaner.

Thanks, Jeremy. I'll give it a shot (no pun intended)and post the results
