View original topic: Engine stumbles under partial throttle

I have a 1993 Eurovan that developed two problems concurrently. The engine hesitates or stumbles under light acceleration or partial throttle, and the check engine light sometimes comes on at low engine speeds (e.g. idle, or coming to a stop.)

I'm not a mechanic, but I suspect something like the 02 sensor. Any opinions?
Thanks

If you have an autozone nearby, they can check OBD readings for free- that will point you in the right direction.

OK, no autozone in my area. Explain what 'OBD' is and I my call around to see who else checks for free. Thanks, BTW.

On Board Diagnostics- it's the computer that makes your engine light come on. Starting in '96 they all use OBDII, which maybe all autozone has- so it might not do you any good anyway.

You need to find out what the cause of the check engine light is before anything. I am a VW Tech at a dealership in NY so I can help you from there, but you need to know what is causing the problem first. Everyone always wants to blame the O2 sensor when a CEL comes on....there are only about 2000 different things that can make that little sucker come on, what are the chances of you guessing it first time?

Thanks for the replies. I have an appt to have a VW shop do a diagnosis. If it is the O2 sensor, is it fairly easy to replace (in other words, can I do it myself)?
