Hi guys. I've just picked up a '71 Squareback with old, faded, metalflake, paint with no clear over it. The PO had tried waxing it at some time and that made it worse. Kind of smeared things around... Will it ever shine again? What techniques do you use?

Thanks,

you could try some wax and grease remover to get rid of the wax he put on there. then once all that is cleaned up, Color sand it and buff it would be best to get someone to spray clear on it here is Matts good post on color sanding

If it's a single stage with metallic/metal flake in it, you can't color sand it or you'll go thru one coat and into the previous .
You're pretty much stuck with what you have. That's why we clear over metallics now-I know single stage metallics are still out there but as far as I'm concerned, they are for cheap cars and used car salesmen( not trying to put down ALL used car salespeople).

You could try either Turtle Wax brand "Color Back" or "TR3-Resin Glaze" products. I have had some sucess in bringing back dead single stage paint with these products.

Thanks Keith! I'll keep that in mind. As you can see, I'm no longer Dub-less! Hope all is well with you and yours.

I purchased the TR3-Resin Glaze today. I won't be able to give 'er a bath until next weekend but I'll let you guys know how it works on the single stage metal flake paint.

It will bring it back pretty good depending on just how far gone ( oxidized ) it has gotten. On metallics it is not as effective as solid color but should yield some shine... be sure to wax over it after you get it done... the TR3 will bead water like it is waxed but it's results last longer if you wax over it.

Good to hear from you Michael... I did not realize you have changed your login.

Thanks Keith. You knew I'd be back! How's that little mechanic of yours? They grow fast, don't they.

Cheers,

Well, the paint must be pretty far gone. The TR3-Resin Glaze didn't work. A guy at the auto shop recommended Nu Finish (think that's how they spelled it). That stuff work at all? I heard a story about an old lady mixing water and Kerosine and spraying it on her car to shine up an old faded paint job. Sound crazy?

Your not going to find some majic potion. On a NON metallic paint a little cut and buff will sometimes do wonders. With metallic....your kinda screwed.

folksWerks in Beaverton, OR has Thomas, who can do THIS below to original paint. :D
