Hey guys. Since im just about as far as im going to go with my baja for now, im helping my uncle finish his up. I have some reclining racing seats that came with sliders, but now that were trying to plan how they are gonna go in i realized that they will be WAY too low if i mount them directly to the pan. I noticed mooreparts has something they call a slide seat mount, but there is not picture on the site. How did you all mount aftermarket seats? Pictures would be nice if youve got them. :D

Since not all seats are the same, fab away! You basically need to figure that one out just by looking at what you have. I have seen lots of different ways, but if there is a cage in it put in some bars from side to side and mount your sliders to the new bars. Or weld in some tabs coming off the side bars or the tunnel. Get creative...

Pry or cut off the stock mount, Get the slider mount, and some 1/4" steel plate. Place the mount on the pan, fit some plates on top of the pan and under the pan, Weld the mount to the top plate and bolt the lower plate and the top together. If its to low, (fit and measure before welding in the mount) get some square tubing and place that between the mount and the pan then bolt it to the plate under the pan. If hat didnt make sense, forgive me, Im drunk.......

So before I put in any mounts, I had to fix and rust proof the pan.
I used the POR-15 Pan and Trunk restorer. It is pretty cool. Comes with everything you need to do the job right.
and since I know you all love pics, here you go:

Looks good.
What are the tie-down's for???

CopperBaja Tue Sep 26, 2006 11:32 am

I've seen others take square channel tubing...(I think that's what it's called) and go from heater channel to center hump, then just mount the seats on it.

I don't know how strong it would be, but it looks simple.
I'll look for some pics.

Here is Skidmark's approach....of course his is mounted to his tubed chassis....

David58bug Tue Sep 26, 2006 12:31 pm

Now that's the way to mounts seats, they are adjustable and bullet proof too. Skidmark can I copy your design? Skid using your design what would be the best solution to make them hinged in the front for access to the raer seat. I have the front figured out I just am trying to figure out a locking bullet proof mechanismn for the rear.

one reason i don't like skid's design is rust. those might be hard to actually move after a while?

David58bug Tue Sep 26, 2006 1:14 pm

HamburgerBrad I guess you couldn't paint them could you? Seeing how they slide. I see a well design seat mount that is simple and can be painted and touched up as needed with a spray bomb. I don't think Skid was going to leave them naked. I guess you could clear coat them. By the way how are your seats mounted?

HamburgerBrad Tue Sep 26, 2006 1:41 pm

i built a framework going between cage tubes, mounted the sliders on those.

Thanks. Those are actually the stock seat belt mounts.

And i forgot to put in the fist post that i was going with something similar to nicksans approach. not sure on all the details, i have to wait for the slider mounts from mooreparts top show up...

Here are some pics of how I did mine. This is not a serious off-road vehicle. I used 3/4" square tube and just fabbed up the mounts at the correct height. To get the height, I used a piece of plywood on blocks to test the seat position. If you were going to do something serious, you could tie in to the tunnel and either the heater channel or better yet tubing connected between the front and rear hoop of a roll cage.

I use quick releases so the seats can pop out in a couple of seconds for access.

Good luck

I can't really take credit for that design, it came that way from the PO.... I agree about the rust issue, you can't paint them. Even taking them out and plating them with zinc or something won't stop the slider from scratching the plating off. It's an interesting approach, for sure. The only reason I am not changing it is I want to get the car drivable first. I am spending my labor on functional work instead of improving existing designs as much as possible. But it does show you that the only limitation to your seat mount design is your imagination!!

HamburgerBrad Tue Sep 26, 2006 5:24 pm

if you could find some way around that, it would be great. seems like an otherwise sound design.

Skidmark Tue Sep 26, 2006 9:02 pm

Yeah, that's why I decided to run with it that way for now... I will have to do something about that when I tear it down for paint and powder coat. But that won't happen until a few desert trips are under my belt. I need to tune the suspension and work all the bugs out first. Oh wait... maybe I should get it running first. :?

Looks good, mach4!
Are those APC seats? How comfy are they? Is it a daily driver?
I drive 21 miles to work, plus plan on going off road...

I hope you put backing plates under the pan where you bolted those frames down... At the very least really big fender washers. Or in an accident those bolts will pull right throughthe floor pan.

I was thinking the same thing!! I am in the middle of fabbing up some adjustable seat mounts myself..... Skid how do your seats "lock" into place? (they are adjustable right?)

So I recieved the mounts from Moore today. I will be mounting them and posting pictures tomorrow.
