Not a lot to go on there......
If it is more of a whirring sound that goes away when the revs go up, I'm thinking timing belt tensioner; has the belt been replaced recently? Some non-vw shops forget to replace the tensioner when replacing the belt, and that's bad news. |

| Is your golf equipped with a air pump? If so this only runs when motor is cold, and makes a whinning spooling noise, completley normal.to see if you have a pump look in the middle bottom half of the front of your motor, its black plastic, and has some hoses comiing out, just to the right of the dip stick. |
