Depends on what you want -- the Type I beam will lower it ~2".

all you really need is a type 1 beam with type 1 spindles and adjusters. You can narrow it up to about 2 inches without cutting the fender-wells.

I am running 15 x 5.5s with 145s up front and 15 x 5.5s with 165s in the back.

i thought a 4'' would stick under there even w/ shock towers???

i know on a bug it's 3" with stock shock towers so do you need drop spindles or stock spindles to slam it down with maybe a set of 175/55/15. i hate to have to buy drop spindles and you don't need them.

I have 175-55-15 Two inch narrow beam (max) and adjusters. I would
not try 145's with dropped spindles unless the beam in adjustable. It
would be too low to get clearance without adjusters.

i haven't been home in a while to get pics of it yet. it's pumpkin orange. and i'm looking for a fender. so 2" with shock towers. so i think i'm going to try to find a late ghia with disc brakes and take the tranny out too. if you read the new hot vw's that just came out i didn't know that a 71-74 ghia comes stock with a freeway flyer. i might try to find one some time this fall.

A stock 71-74 Ghia transmission is *not* a freeway flyer.

My now rides a treat... 2.5" CBs on adjustable type 1 beam but 15" early steels with smart 145s. Beam has a further 2" of down travel to go but tyres scuff the fender tops... Two notchs at the back on 165s. Go for it chap!

NICE!!! my 4" beam should be done today or tommorrow!!!! how much are those smart 145's? are they smaller than 165-45's???

i'm just stating what hot vw's said about the ghia free way flyer it's in the mag under the milage motor article. all i know is a free way flyer is a 3.88 r&p with .83 4th gear. correct me if i'm wrong

You're correct about what a freeway flyer generally is. The stock Ghia transmission came with a 0.89 4th gear, never with a 0.82.

close enough i didn't know the exact gear. it would still be alot better than the 4.12 with a .92 i think. i still might find a junk ghia and take it out i don't plan to go off road in the thing any ways. but that is way down the road from now. but if i find an old junk 71-74 ghia i could kill 2 birds with one stone. by taking the front beam and the tranny out. now here is another question if a switch to a ghia tranny do i switch the axles to ghia too? i know basically that a thing is on a ghia pan anyways so i didn't know if they need to be changed too.

oh and for the other guy i know this 175/55/15 or shorter than 145 and the 165/45 or shorter than the 175/55/15 i think one of those tires come of the smart car which you should be able to get.

Nope. You'll want to keep the output flanges from your Thing transmission in order to bolt everything together.
