Anyone have any horror stories that they found later after buying a VW?

I'd like to thank the PO of my VW for: Doing such a great job on re-welding the frame head back on the pan after what must have been a good hit to the front. He did such a great job that the entire beam was moved to the rear about 3-4 inches and he added some sort of homemade reinforcement tubes from the pan to the beam on each side. I ended up replacing the whole pan because that one was so bad.

somehow getting a fist sized rust hole behind the drivers seat when the rest of the car paint undercoat pan etc was in PERFECT condition...and for removing the Zbar (i just put this back in)

Damn ! You mean you guys buy this kind of junk after looking the car over ? I mean you couldn't tell the beam was push back this far ?

Well, not at the time... believe it or not. I noticed it when i was looking at the loose king/link pins and saw a strip of green paint ahead ofthe shock tower underneath the spray-on undercaoting where the shock tower USED to be... LOL. The body was in pretty good shape and I was looking for a mild project anyway.

I'll tell you about the 3/8 rubber fuel line he ran under the running boards alllllll the way to the back of the car later. :wink:

The car is sitting on a 1972 IRS pan now after a "weekend job" that turned into 6 months.

try replaceing a head that was JB welded to the barrels and the barrels JB'd to the case. :)

wow the jb weld king was in the house that must suck. kinda like the p.o. of my super cutting it into a baja. stupid

after i found what looked to be JB on the case seem i tool a hammer and a chisle to it. I wanted to keep the cam and crank.
i must say that it did not leak at all though when it was running :)

I'd like to thank all the previous owners of all my current rides. They took very good care of them as none of my cars are hack jobs- unless you count my '61 sunroof which I grafted an original Golde sunroof to it :wink: but that would be my fault :oops:

I would thank my PO for installing a nice Gene Berg built 1835 in it back in 1991 (PO gave me all of the receipts from this car), and covering the original paint with black primer. Not to mention all of the other Berg parts, like the mid trannie mount, and the rear traction bar, the berg 1.5 qt sump and full flow. I had to get rid of the butt-rock air scoop (on a shelf in my bedroom).

When I found it.

I thank whichever PO of my '61 decided to cut the dash to put in an aftermarket radio. Schmuck.

...at least they left the "no gas gauge" dash trim in place. :)

Our PO cleaned the contacts on the fuse box. When we purchased the car, nothing (I mean nothing) worked. It was a great selling / bargaining point for us.

Spent 15 minutes and $ 15.00 at the mechanics shop making / changing the wire connects to the box, and everything worked!

Some PO work is disastrous, but in our case, it was financially advantageous.

I'd like to thank my PO for the hack welding job done to my clutch fork with what suspiciously looks to be small bit's of coat hanger, the one bolt holding the master cylinder in, and hand tight axle nuts.

I would like to thank them for not every touching the inside. :D

I had a euro 66 that had the same dash. I could never figure out why? The hair brained ideas that some people get. While looking for a junk car with a donor dash, I found my 64 in better condition with good performance parts on it for $300. The dash even still has the radio hole still in tacked. Thanks PO.

The PO of my '65 Bug that used a thick paper clip to extend the clutch cable at the pedal cluster (he connected it at the rear first so it couldn't reach the hook at the cluster--so he then added washers at the rear end under the wingnut). Knifed right through the metal. Did I mention he was proud that he had also rebuilt the engine? I started saving for a rebuild that day.

I would like to extend my gratitude to all Previous Owners...without them, none of us would have our small wonders. :) even when they are hacked up, we still enjoy fixing them.

Yes, I have gratitude for my dad's foresight to buy the '71 fastback new and then hand it down to me... now being restored so he can drive it again.

what did you use to remove the black primer without destroying the paint underneath? i have tried grafitti remover, pledge power dissolver, wet sanding...
