Thank you to the POs of both my '67s for being rediculously meticulous to the point of writing down every little thing ever done to the car, the mileage at the time, and the date done. The little book in the upper right corner even has every time recorded they put gas in it :D ! Oh, and thanks to both for keeping the books and records, too, including the registrations which show the official date and mileage of the car through time!

I'd like to thank the PO of my VW for:
+ installnig front disc brakes
- jimmy-rigging the wiring harness
+ i learned how to rewire a bug
- installing wrong rear oil covers, so axles always leaked
+ getting empi riveras
- REBUILDING ENGINE THEN TIMING IT WRONG
(we all know were that went)
+ me learning how to rebuild an engine
(the right way)
- using a grinder to remove a large area of paint
- using wrong pressure plate when changing clutch
+ i learned how to replace a clutch plate, disc, and bearing.
- hacking out the left behind dash area) the hole left of the steering wheel
+ i have a excuse for putting in a custom gauge area
- installing a later year rear apron
- installing a later year door, and weldin on new hinges
- drilling holes under dash area
- spraying Krylon over the OG burgandy paint
( nasty green, smeared all over the place)
+ i have an excuse to repaint it
+ ive learned how to paint cars
+ i have a reason to spend $$
well, the car was in great shape, just a few mis-matched parts and incorrect wiring lead me to a waay cheap price. the car cost less than the rims would have cost if they went and sold them!
+++ happy vw lover :D |

Wet sanding. I tried oven cleaner, but did not have the patience to dick around with it. Apply it, let it sit, and see what happens... couldn't deal with it.
I used 320 grit sand paper and a steady flow of water from the garden hose to take down the fields of black primer. From there I used Meguiars Swirl Remover and Medium cut cleaner (rubbed all by hand) to fine tune the paint and get rid of the small bits of black, that had I kept rubbing I would have burned through the good paint. Just take your time. I burned through one small place on the deck lid, but fixed that with some paint that I had mixed up (not the best match due to the inevitable sun fading). |

Cut dash in the typical stereo area and tons of holes under that in the dash area.
Jimmy rigged wiring, along with more holes in the body to route it instead of going through roof channel.
No rust and pans are new, but theres a lot of glue crap around pans.
Rebuilt motor that was timed 180 degrees off...pinged all the way back home. Really bad rebuild too. Lasted me a year and now I'm waiting on my new engine.
Paint job that was a year old and was already falling apart. Looks good from far away, but it has big chips, very nicely done bondo areas that I couldn't see and the clear coat is flaking away, not to mention it looks like they just randomly painted the entire car without taking out the wiring or anything (wires were all silver painted  )
I paid 3000 for it and I live in southern california. People give me crap all the time that I spent to much money...money is money and this is my only real hobby. It wasn't easy finding a bug though, so I still don't think I lost much money. I always wanted a bug, yet had never driven one, let alone been in one, so I didn't look with scrutiny. I looked at the obvious stuff.
I wanted something that I could drive often and the interior was in very good shape at the time (all the glue has lost its holding ability). I don't care though. I plan on custom-restoring it and I have no plans at all of selling it, ever. |

Cutting out the seat rails, and using u-bolts to hold the seat to the floor.
Rerouting gas line under the pan.
Leaving the 36hp in there and keeping it 6 volt.
Setting a Buy It Now price of $500.

I would like to thank the PO for so much overspray on all the original chrome and window parts that after a little steel wool they look damn near perfect. Thanks for all the protection!
Oh yea and also for welding the body to the pans and leaving all but five of the pan/body bolts off after. Also for leaving all those little pieces of the old floor pans on to rust on top of the new ones. |

For not doing anything to it. He left it in a barn for around 20 yrs.. Now it's mine all mine !!!!
Except for having a professional VW mechanic rebuild the motor recently. He left me all the receipts : window sticker from '59 to oil change and rotate in 1977. Original owner had a gas heater installed at the dealership for a whopping 75.00. That includes the heater. Installation was 20.94. Original owners manual, service scedule coupons and many other good reading papers.
Tear down begins tomorrow... Steve |

| I would like to thank the bonehead PO of my 66 T1 for: Installing Hyundi seat belts using sheetmetal screws through the heater channels & the main wiring harness. The main wire harness had 5 screws in it & not realizing what the fuck he did wired the tail lights, fuel pump & head lights to the + side of the coil so when the key is on WOW everything worked....Have sence repaired the harness & would you know everything works perfect! This is the best part, the car rode like shit & noticed before I bought it ,it had an adjustable beam & it was set at stock height & wandering how it was lowered, drop spindels? So I went to my local shop (Kymco) & bought a new set of shocks thinking these were shot & went to remove them & the front end jupmed off the ground...Hmmm car sitting stock now.. Well he bought a set lowered shocks & found some way to compress the front end to make them fit not knowing the beam was adjustable, presto instant low job & not even sure how the shocks even stayed together.... I have more but will stop here for now... |
