Here's the W lid after a little DA sanding with 80 grit. I also ran a metal file across the damaged areas. Check it out:
Enjoy, Steve |

I'm not giving up. I'm in waiting/holding mode. I work at an extremely busy Collision shop, along with the restorations we do. Thanks for checking up on me though. Spring also brings girls softball and Challenger baseball. There is only so many hours in the day...Hopefully soon !!!!!

4 weeks later with new metal:
Steve,
Quick question.
I'm working on my rear crossmembers now I got from Wolfsburg west. I had similar rust issues and have cut most of the rust away, got the old crossmembers out...and ran into a pickle.
The question is, does the lip that contours to the wheel well mate up inside the wheel well or outside? My driver side seems to mate up good to the outside, yet the passenger side seems to mate up better to the inside.
Pictures of this portion of my project are at:

Thanks!

Steven, I'm pretty sure it mates up on the inside. Just remember aftermarket parts have to be trimmed and re-fit. I looked thru your pics, very nice work. It looks like you have a little more metal than I had to work with !!!!

Sorry for the lack of ANY progress pics. I'm hoping to get back to my '59 very soon. We had our local VW Club show yesterday and man did I see some real nice late '50's and early '60 Beetles. 2 that stick out are a '59 sedan owned by a cool woman who really loves her bug and a '57 sedan from Crown Point that was just AWESOME !! Thanks to everyone that has posted here and emailed me to get back to business.

Here's the latest pix. I did as much metal repair as I felt necessary. A skim coat of filler, and then some high build catalysed primer.
Then I applied guide coat and hand blocked both sides with 180 grit. Then 3 coats of fresh primer. You can almost smell the wet primer.
If anyone is interested in this lid.... It is FOR SALE. Go ahead and fill up my message box with offers.
Ok. On to the car. I am getting the headliner installed next week (I hope) and I needed to install some insulating mat. I did the roof today. Next up is the rear compartment.
The right door:
From the back window:
The chassis waiting for the body:
I know it's been awhile. But these are the latest.
Enjoy, Steve
PS. I'm serious about selling the W lid.......so don't be shy with offers |

Hey Cushe63 your work is mind boggling!
I have a question - in looking at your resto it looks like you welded the rear of the pans under the rear outriggers. I'm just curious - I thought they should go on the lip of the outrigger and not under. Thanks, Lou |
