Anyone know where I can get a rubber mat for the Vanagon passenger area? If not something original, has anyone made a DIY version, and if so, what and from where?

Have you tried Bus Depot or Go Westy or Bus Boys?
These are just some of the companies that sell parts and accessories for
Vanagons.
I bought a real nice rubber mat from Bus Depot and it fits the passenger area on my Westy like a glove.
If I recall it comes in a few different colors too. :bus_orange:

What I think I see at Go Westy is something that lays over the carpet. I am looking for the rubber mats like what the early Vanagons and older buses had pre-carpet. It was just a thick rubber mat that served as the flooring.
Guess I should just call them. Duh!

i think you are looking for the one piece mat that covered the entire front floor.
i saw one in the just kampers catalog

I know the mat you're looking for. Some 1980-81 Vanagons came with these rubber floors. Also, the 1990-1991 base model Vanagon had these too.

From VW they are no longer available. Bus Depot lists the front one on their website but they are actually sold out. You might want to post a wanted ad on here, or call some wrecking yards. That's about all I can think of.

I'm excited that I found this place for the passenger area of my van. I didn't relish spending $70 + s/h for a mat. Particularly since I will be cutting it into an 'L' shape to fit around my newly installed Weekender jumpseat.

Various patterns to suit your needs. 3mm and 6mm thicknesses.

A 48"x48" 3mm piece is coming to me for under $50. I chose the wide rib corrugated.

Awesome website, lots of choices, even for us finicky Vanagon owners!

I wish I would have had the opportunity to give an offer on that a year ago when I was looking for replacements for my front carpets / mats.

I'm not unhappy with my Sewfine front/walk through and I bought a used front/walk through mat set from a Samba member for $50. BUT, that mat in your link would have been the bees knees. Too much money for me now given I have plunked thousands more since I began.

Do you not have rubber under your carpet in the back?
In my '91, the carpet pulls right out revealing a nice rubber floor.

Anyways, I've thought of replacing the carpet with recycled rubber mats.
Basically super spongy mat like you find in commercial kitchens, only cheaper. Super grippy so the dog doesn't slid around on it. Still mud and water proof.
I've seen it at EcoHaus here in Seattle but their website doesn't have it.

Build: No. I do not have rubber under my old carpet. But, my rig is 10 years older than yours, too :)

Take a look at the link I provided, above, to the company I am using for my passenger rubber matting. I think you'll find what you are looking for there. One of their products is "elephant mat," is recycled, and spongy.

I, too, have dogs and is one of the reasons I wanted rubber matting in the passenger area. Well, that and for my three kids.....
