hmmm only 225 bugs in 1970 made with a flat windshield...? you can also see the ash tray was ripped out somewhere along the way. i know rust coast bugs aren't real cheap, but 5 grand for a super sedan? i would gladly pay that much if it really got 40mpg!

I recently ordered an alternator stand from a very reputable vendor. They had it listed as OE VW Brazilian. Unfortunately the one I received was an aftermarket piece, not a single stamp on it anywhere. When I contacted the vendor they said that was all their supplier was able to get now. I was going to return it but decided to keep it after finding he was right -- simply can't find new OE VW alternator stands anywhere. But the kicker is the vendor still has it listed on their site as OE VW from Brazil with a picture of a VW-stamped stand.

Are these aftermarket stands as bad as people say (about cracking at the base)? It's been getting tough even finding a good used VW stand--a lot of the classifieds ads are also for aftermarket pieces, or stands that are labeled "gen/alt" stands that obviously wouldn't clear the body of an alternator.

I asked for pics showing the business side and was turned down.

I hate Mexico. You can´t get a decent quality part in here even if you are willing to pay for it, they look at you weird in the parts store. If you think that it happens a lot in the US , you have to come in here and see how 99.9% of the people buys crap parts.

I was looking for balljoints, focusing on something like MOOG or another good brand, and what I have found in 2 suspension parts stores, so far, is 100 pesos crap, like 7 dollars each balljoint. And of course the comment: "This one is good (the cheap ones), the MOOG costs 2 or 3 times more and also we don´t get it anymore."

Damn.... Hope the VW has some quality "leftovers".

Rant over.

Don´t worry Mr. Bruce, that was going to be the next place to visit. They (Agricola....) have become my friends during this year. I just have to go with the right person in there, because I can almost bet that in their ETKA system ball joints must be no longer available. But there´s a possibility that they still have some in Puebla.

I guess I´m still having faith in the local parts stores. But come on, no availabity in quality ball joints and tie rod ends in a suspension shop. Come on...

:?

I´m from Mexico Doc, in here we still can get some orginal parts in the VW dealers.

Reporting on my visit to the local VW dealer today, good news and bad news. The good is that they still have in stock ball joints, the bad is that they´re nakata, which I´ve heard that come from Brasil.

So, I´m still looking for good balljoints.

doc1369 Sat Jul 10, 2010 12:29 pm

I don't know if this helps because I don't know much about how to tell good ball joints from bad. hope it does

Ask them if they are getting those directly from Puebla, or some local distributor. If they are getting them locally, tell them you want to wait for a shipment from Puebla. If they won't get genuine VW ones, contact VW directly to complain that their authorized dealer won't sell genuine VW parts.

I think they are from Puebla, they are packaged and labeled as genuine parts, they have the box that VW uses for their parts. This has already happened to me with brake parts, I´ve bought in the dealer rear wheel cylinders that were Varga brand, and rear brake hoses too. I opened a topic about that some time ago.

Were these brands, nakata and varga, suppliers for VW at some time??

They probably mean dual port. And you "CAN" get a 5-speed for a Beetle, ask Glenn. Doesn't mean it "HAS" a 5-speed, but you can get one.

Glenn Mon Aug 16, 2010 3:24 pm

Reverse is a speed... isn't it?

And yes you can get 5 forward gears for a Super... but they gotta pay.
