The thermostat is junk.
Then there's this "complete" thermostat kit that's missing all the clips to hold things together, and more importantly, it's missing the return spring!
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=889670
If that wasn't enough, the flaps assemblies he has are both LEFT side flaps. They won't work on the right side.
WHAT CRAP!!!
New to the forums, so don't beat me too badly if there is a dedicated place for this post that I haven't found yet please :)
Ok, anyone got a good thermostat that isn't junk for a 73 super? How can you tell a good one from one that isn't? I need the rod going up too, buy my flaps are intact (I think, as the linkage is there on the front of the shroud and springs back into place when I move it). I live in Denver, and cold weather is here! My heater does fine after it warms up, but thinking a quicker warm up would be splendid. |

The thermostat should not be filling up the bracket it is mounted in. That means it has blown and is permanently expanded.

I emailed the seller when this comment was made and they said they verified it is a left and right side. |

This means the seller doesn't know what the correct right side flap assembly looks like. The flaps in her ad are 100% both LEFT flaps. Look at the pic carefully, one is flipped over compared to the other.
Here's his pic:
Now here's a LEFT flaps assembly oriented the same way as the one on the right side of her pic:
And now here's the exact same LEFT flaps assembly flipped over, oriented the same way as the one on the left of her pic:
Finally, here are the two DIFFERENT assemblies that are needed in a kit.

| Bruce is 100% correct on the flaps.... good luck to anyone that buys that, if they manage to get them both mounted and the control linkage to work side to side, they'd find nowhere to attach the thermostat rod... |

Yea, that's cool, I just didn't want somebody else to beat you up worse. I run these carbs and call them Webers too, saves a lot of hassle when talking to the guy whose uncles cousin had that Porsche motor in his back in the day...
And your price is very fair, good luck. |

Otherwise, you need to specify what Mexican running boards you are referring to. Genuine VW of Mexico running boards rival German in quality. |

Exactly. Cheap running boards are cheap running boards. Thatīs it.
An original VW of Mexico running board can support an adult easily standing in it, even 2. Try that with any cheap running board.
Also, you can contact Antonio Trejo and ask him how much is it for a real running board. |

| Why is it soooo difficult to make repop or aftermarket parts that actually fit? Take for example, the nylon/plastic seat slider bushings. Not even a chance of fitting as shipped. After much head scratching, grinding, cussing and bleeding, I got 3 of the 4 rear ones, and 1 of the 2 fronts in place. It's just a frigging piece of plastic, what is the problem? Front wheel bearing washers? had to drill the center hole out and refile the keyway onto them. Ordered thrice from three different vendors, all sent the same POS that doesn't fit. Don't even get me started on Tri Five Chebie parts. |

Because Americans are more focused on price than quality. Read enough posts in this forum and you'll see that most people play the "I can't afford ..." card. In return, retailers focus on the profit margin and moving inventory rather than stressing quality, which will drive up prices.
Read this thread for some insight. |

X2!!! I replaced mine with the VW of Mexico boards. Not only do they look good but I had a 200lbs plus co-worker stand on them not knowing any better. Didn't hurt it at all. |
