 Can you give me the best times carried out on one 1/4 of miles and 1/8 of miles with a 1776cc???

VwFix Tue Oct 31, 2006 11:58 am

bump I am curious too i have heard of 13 on turbo 1776s

turtle racer Tue Oct 31, 2006 12:02 pm

normal I am already has 13s without turbo!!!

VwFix Tue Oct 31, 2006 12:07 pm

wow that is awesome because I am going to be building a 94 by 74 soon, this should get intersting would you mind posting your spec sheet

Muffler Mike Tue Oct 31, 2006 1:18 pm

too bad some of the old timers dont come on here.
then you would hear stories like 1679cc motors clearing the 200 hp mark naturally aspirated. NOT turbo'd. the old timers that did NHRA class racing in the old days. that kind of stuff use to put them in the high 11's low 12's, depending on the pound per cubic inch they had to run.
it comes down to how much work do you want to put in it

turtle racer Tue Oct 31, 2006 1:24 pm

we have what we call the weenie motor it is somewhere around 1640. it has turned a best of 12:12 in the 1/4. it is a little strange though. it is 94x59. it has a 40 horse crank that has been turned down to around 59 stroke with chevy rods. the cam was a special ground by dial in. the cam took alot of track time to get it right. but engine is smaller than the 1641 index that we had to run why back in the 70's. it was a bit famous back then. it runs a very old set of Lonnie Reed heads. it runs a stock flywheel with a berg 6 pound pulley to help get it out of the hole. the damn thing with turn 10000rpm all day long. we still have it. in fact we are about to put it back on the track so my wife can learn to race. a few medical problems are about to take me out of the car. i have been racing for over 35 years and not to be able to work on and race my cars is going to be a very hard thing to do. but i cant just stop doing what i love. i just hope God gives me a few more months of seat time. if not my family will step in for me, but i will race as long as i can. i know this got alittle off subject, but as long as someone in my family can get behind the wheel and i will keep experimenting with the old vw to try and get all i can out of it...... so try anything and everything that you can. the good thing is that you dont have to have a 73 mm or smaller wedgemated. once my wife or son get seat time i might sell this engine. and yes it can be ran on the street. with enough money it could go now. we only have a 1/2 dozen or more around the shop. this engine on juice or turbo would be an easy low 11 or high 10 1641. might even try it with the fuel injection turbo on alky. just because i can. i wonder does anyone know what the fastest 1569 cc engine is because the turbo has 92 autocraft p/c which would make it like a 1569. might just try it for next season.

A guy in Texas was runninmg mid 12's with his 1776 in a 1800 lb car. I also remember him saying he has $2000 in Clyde Berg heads.

There was an old timer that had a short wheelbase Rail dragster doing 9's on the 1/4mile with a 1776, dual 48IDAs. He was at Bug-in32. Wish i had that car.

Hey TurtleRacer, Is that you in HotVW? Nice car

Droolman Wed Nov 01, 2006 11:00 am

i believe it was scotty mcmannus from texas went a 10:80 in his ghia way back when to set a new national record with a 88x73. this was an all steel 59 ghia that still had the working tail lights. most of the guys here dont remember when there was no ET racing. everything was class racing and you ran off an index A/MC, B/MC, or C/MC for bugs. Like my dad and others when you went for the record you would drain all the grease from the trans. every little bit helped..... the good o days Mike.... i have a ton of pictures from then.

Are you talking about this car? That's Brian Hyerstay's car. Unless he has upped the displacement it was a 1679ccmotor. 220hp @10,000 rpm. He had the NHRA G/Dragster class record with a 9.25 until Michelle Costa took it from him with a 8.97. I cant hot link so it is picture 134.

Droolman I remember that car well. It was a wedgemated 1800 and I think Scotty told me once he ran some unreal compression ratio--like 15 ot 16:1. I believe he wrecked it and the engine went into a Fiat X-19? Or was it the other way around....my memory fails at that point.

If you have pictures, please post them! I have also been trying to locate pictures of the old Hefler/Cherry car. I remember the A/MC, B/MC of course.

Thanks for the memory..

Droolman Thu Nov 02, 2006 11:37 am

he traded the ghia for the fiat and wrecked the fiat. i have no idea what happened to the ghia. and yes we ran 16:1 compression all the time with alcohol. i will try and get to the photos this weekend they are at my brothers house. i have a picture of scotty's car and Bear's car. i think i have one of Lyle Cherry's also. if i dig deep enough i think i have one of Gene Berg from the 60's with his rail on top of his bug.

when think of you?? What tranny, gears, R&P are you running? My motor is a old school motor OG built by Dave Larsen back in the early 80's. 1776 ith Fumio heads, Mitsubishi Valves, Deano short manifolds, 48's and 12.1 compression. It was built for my now deceased friend Jim Whitehead back in the day for his Oval. He told stories of out running the San Antonio police in it back in 86. When I bought it 4 years ago it had been freshened up with 92's and lower compression. Before I install it I plan on either taking it back to 90.5s or machining it out to a 1915. Sorry for the long response. BTW I just got my Berg 5 in with a 4.12 R&P with an .82 5th
