We totally overpaid for it but it was my first and i commute a ton back and forth from ventura to long beach for school so my parents didnt want me to be fixing one up so here it is.

| thankfully it does already have an alarm. I feel safe here in the burbs heck i live in a guest house behind a nice fam. My place is super safe cuz the wife is home all day. And my alarm is loud enough to hear from my place so im not too worried. Before i moved i bought my car cover and got the lock for it too. |

| Don't feel so safe. I had my 67 stolen out of a security parking lot in college in broad daylight. See my comments in the other "67 only" thread a ways back. You can never be too careful. |

Brian listen to what these people are saying---watch that car like a hawk. You driving that beauty (and she is a beaut') around S. Cal is like duct taping pork chops to your ass and diving into a tank of of crocodiles.
Sounds like you have great parents so hit them up for some spare change for a Berg locking shifter. Please? The don't look stock of course but are a great deterrent. See below:

| You can never have too many Club devices attached to the steering wheel and pedal. Alarms don't deter anyone. Walk through a parking structure any day and see how many people attend to a car that's going off. |

i have a pink club that was in my black 67 i sent my son.yours for free Sue. i will bring it to campout. the pink clashed with the hoodride look of my 60 ragtop. and yes it is the florescent pink one. i bought the black 67 from a female teacher, that owned the 67 from 1982-2000 it was parked in 1985 due to engine seizing. unlike you, that has driven your java green 67 since 1974 and always check the oil level i also have 3 67 steering column locks and can install one in suebug beetle. |

| done deal. the 61-66 uses a different key for column lock. 1967 uses the same key as door, ignition and rear hood lock. one key fits all. my savannah beige 67 has all locks installed and uses 1 key. |

| You can put a shifter lock on the stock shifter. I always use a locking decklid latch. Unplug the coil and lock it up. Kinda hard to start that way. |

what exactly do I need to switch to a column lock? is it a whole diff column or could you just drill a hole in the existing column and hook up the lock? |

| alarms arn't good enough, if the thief wants the bug bad enough, he'll slide under the car, clip the battery terminal wire by the starter & tow it away. When my bug was stolen, the crooks pushed the car to a safe distance & then figured out how to get it started. |

I've heard of that happening more than once.
I would seriously look into having someone fab up a shifter for you that can be removed easily. Park, put it in reverse and remove the shifter. If you find two stock shifters and a creative metal worker the possibilites are vast. That wouldn't solve the problem altogether, but it would stop the average thief better than a locking shifter. |
