Can anyone please tell me where this net should go? It looks like the overhead storage net, but then without the clips. It was on ebay not too long ago.
I always thought the vw nets only were made in grey and brown?

Thanks guys!

That's not it, it doesn't have the clips to be mounted that way.

Cool box. Perhaps someone in the past removed the authentic overhead net & shoved that Red thing in there.

The box says Rot in the label which means red in Germany so I guess it's an original net, but for roof or interior ???

The part number written on the box (111 017 231) is for a front, beige color, roof net.
Info from a 1957 accessory catalog.
Still looking for more info....

I've had at least six over-head interior roof nets and I've never seen a red one before. The brown is for splits and the grey is for ovals. Red is something else. :? A '57 part number with a beige color doesn't make sense either unless it's a replacement net. The Grey nets began in '53. This is really strange.

1938/1939 catalog (not VW). Interesting to note that pre-war, you could have many colors. red, black, blue, dark blue, beige, grey, green, brown

I almost bid on that net as well that was recently on ebay. Most of the net matches the design specs with the known originals, including the material, the crimp reinforcements. The one noticeable difference (not just the color red) are those spring clips, which are interesting but I'd think they'd do some damage during installation. Those spring actuated clips should work but they'd really bite into the upper and lower roof areas, and the rounded clip head may permanently deform the upper visible headliner. The original clips however were thin channel clips, much wider and flatter to distribute the forces on each clip, they inserted simply into position, and assembled right would not affect the headliner after taking the net out. Definitely an interesting find though.

Could the clips on the red one be replacements? Don't they seem a bit 'modern'? Still a great find!

Well that's my net now! I have never seen or even heard of a color other than grey or beige but just prior to the auction I was digging through some literature I have and I found this :

How about red, green or blue? Same part number as a NOS beige one I have as well. Pretty interesting. I figure the red one I have must be quite rare.

Nice score! Did you try to mount it?

No. All of my cars are in locked storage 45 minutes from where I live so it’s not convenient to do any test fitting. Maybe in the summer time next year.

I don't get it I guess...............how could those possible work the way they are. What you would have to do is push them under the headliner and hope they bite into the fabric. Surely those things can't be correct. Something must be missing. :?

Nice last second (3 seconds to be exact) snipe

Dave Haviland Wed Nov 08, 2006 2:28 pm

I don't see how those spring clips will work. It's hard enough to push those flat hooks in. And I don't see that they are replacement either. Unless someone used tin snips to cut the flat hooks off and why would you do that? It is definitely a conundrum because it does look like an overhead net (dekkenetz, I think that's how it's spelled on my box). Maybe it is for the roofrack. Time will tell.

That net does not have the "lip" that is on one end to keep articles from falling off and hitting the driver. It is also missing the elastic that goes across the net from front to back. That thing is something else, it is not and overhead VW cargo net is spite of what that box says.........which is also incorrect for what was in it. :?

Hi Bob, as a matter of fact it does have a "lip" that is on one end to keep articles from falling off and hitting the driver. It also has an elastic cord in it as well. I guess I'll have to bring it to work and take some better pictures for everyone. Since I got it, I've only looked at it for about a minute and put it back in the box. I'll get some side-by-side photos of it and the beige one I have for comparison.
Jason.

OK, that being said.................you might have something rare here. Measure it carefully and see if it's smaller than a normal net. What I think is that it's missing clips.................clips that would attach to the spring clips. If that were true, then I think it would need to be smaller or it would sag too much. Perhaps this is a late production net with "improvements" and maybe the spring clips are an attempt to improve the net and take some stress off the elastic. :? Better pictures would help. Sorry Jason, I might have jumped the gun here.
