Did you just use that tow bar and new wheels and drag it that far ?

pretty kool !!!

Actually, it was a bitch to get rolling. All four drums were froze, trans locked up and bad right front wheel bearings. I had to pull the trans, put a roller in, pull front drums and put my extras on with good bearings. Got there at 6pm, was rolling out at 9pm. Towed good and covered up those expired license tabs for the remaining 1000 miles.

I was surprised it was still there, sitting right on the hwy. for 6 months now. Funny thing is, I parted out a '59 Mango S0-23 in the same town back in '99.

ya do what ya gotta do to score.

It would be interesting to tally up all the miles Ive traveled picking up buses.

Im sure Long roof's miles would be far greater than mine.

Very cool Eric

Straightened out the paint color issues I referenced back on page 21 of this thread. Appreciate the responses. Fisnished the body work and got it to a painter that understood mango buses. I got it home today...

What did you end up using for the Seagull Grey paint? Did it match the original paint well?

Riff Raff Thu Sep 11, 2008 12:24 pm

Those pics make the Mango look lighter than original. Almost like the oxidized Mango.
Don't get me wrong, I like it. I think that somewhat faded/oxidized Mango is a more desireable colour than "new" Mango.
Just curious as to whether it's the lighting, or the colour itself?

That Bus looks REALLY good!

IIRC, epoxy primer followed by acryllic urethane base coat with clear coat on top.

This bus was on its way to the crusher when I got it. It had been sanded years ago and repainted a non-VW green by some prior owner. Thus, I decided to do the repainting to as close to stock as possible. As I referenced on page 21, I was having trouble finding one single paint supplier that could mix both colors. Some could do one and some could do the other, but it seemed no one in in my neck of the woods could do both. I finally decided to have someone else paint it, (I'm a rank amatuer), and I found a painter who owned a VW bus and had ties to the people who use a computer to color match. When I got the body work close, I took it to him. They color matched it.

I got the seagull grey sample from the inside of the upper cab air duct access plate. Best sample I had.

These are the guys who did the matching and the paint. Very were fair and very reasonable. http://www.ctcustoms.net/

BTW, Bill Webner says he remembers you from back in the day. Says you are 'good people'.

I think you're right. While I've never seen another mango up close in person, I did get a spray can sample of mango from Sherwin Williams automotive when I was trying to figure out the color and I think it's very close, but slightly different than what I ended up with. My sample came from inside the engine hatch lid. That's nearly 50 years of engine grease and grime, and although I cleaned it really well before they sampled it, no doubt time had an effect on the paint. In any event, it came out better than I expected.

Now I've got to put it all back together.

From this thread, I assume you mango folks like pics, so here are a few more. Here's what I was dealing with...

In regards to the seagull color and the possibly slightly "off" mango color, here is what it looked like coming out of the paint booth before wet sanding and the rub out. It may well be the camera setting, or the paint, but here you go...

No I found this in Aburn Ca not far from where I live. The guy that I bought the bus from was given the bus for free years earlier and he used it for a chicken house and used the front for hay storage... Poor bus :(

That's A early mango. Can you post a pic of the shifter and e-brake handle?what's the vin # on that one? A high tail light mango is pretty uncommon to see!!
