I wanted to chime in here and give you all a little bit of information. I have been lurking around from time to time and really never take the time to post. I have been off roading for 25+ years. I used to have a rail several years ago that I put a small nut redux. set up into. I got all of the stuff out of a 1971 European Thing that I found for sale cheap.(long story) I don't remember the gearing of the actual box itself but I do remember that I installed the axles and boxex into a trans. that had a 4.37 R&P and my final drive ratio was 6.02-1. This rail was a tractor. I had alot of fun with it and broke it many times. I ran this redux. set-up for almost 10 years. The two things that MUST be done before you consider running one of these is you really need to run a super diff. in the trans. and you must beef up the axle tubes. If you do not beef the tubes, you will bend them. When you bend your tubes, your axle will break eventually. For general off roading this was a pretty cool set up. It was great in the mud and for the trails. The thing it was terrible for was climbing big steep hills. If you experience a loss of traction and have to rely on wheel spin, the wheel hop is terrible. The problem with this set up is when you are on the power, the rear suspension becomes stiffer. Goose the throttle and the rear suspension will raise up and get stiffer. In certain suituations this can be useful but for big hills it is terrible. All in all it was a pretty cool set up. Working on it was not that difficult but it can be a pain if you have to go into the trans. to fix something. My current rail has an 091 close ratio box with 930cv's and 3x3 arms. I will never go back to swingaxle ever again. They are great for low horsepower cars but I am way beyond that point now. I hope this helps someone.

No, they were standing up as they are in the stock Thing. The stock Thing has all the factory adapters etc. to put in a type 1 torsion housing. All you have to do is notch the spring plates to make them fit. The end castings on the stock Thing torsion are welded on at a different position than the bug. They are "clocked" differently. Laying them bown would defeat the extra ground clearence goal I was after. Actually, laying them down would help the wheel hop problem a little bit, but not completely. That old rail was cool. That's how I got my nickname, the "Grasshopper". I could actually make the thing hop completely off the ground if I wanted to.

OK so I finally took some pictures of my Lay-down reduction boxes... I was in the process of re-indexing my torsions....
In the last photo you can see how (in the kit) you add two holes to your springplates.... |

After reading this thread I decided to order a set of the Bugzyla adapter plates for my baja. this is what I have now
If you look at the first pic you can see the bent spring plate. I have new/used ones ready to go. I have a small nut tranny, but knowing that the mounting only differs by 1/16 of an inch I think I can get the bugzyla adapters to work. I'll post pics of the project as it goes along. I am planning quite a bit. New torsion bars, spring plates, adaptors, shocks, door panels, reg top, carpet, paint, and getting my heat to work!!

| You can run the adapters on the small nut axles, you just have to oblong the one hole that is by itself on the adapter about 1/16 of an inch. |
