wondering if anyone out there knows whether the overriders I see on type 3 bumpers were a factory option or aftermarket. I have seen them on quite a range of different model years, which leads me to believe they were an aftermaret item.
thanks |

Depends what you mean by overriders? Do you mean the accessory towel-rail overriders:

or the accessory overriders with rubber pads:

or just normal Type 3 overriders?
The towel-rail overriders are a rare original accessory but they are also sold aftermarket by Moon Eyes. The repros are not "correct" reproductions but they look right to the untrained eye.
The overriders with pads are just a normal accessory, although still hard to find. Actually only the pads are the accessory, the metal overriders are still the same design. Most of the vehicles where I've seen these installed from the dealer were 68-69 Type 3s, although they fit 61-70. The later overriders are of a different design but there are accessory pads available for those too. |

Thanks for the info.. I was referring to the towel-rail overriders. I think I might order a set from moon-eyes unless someone out there has a original set, in good or bad shape, that they want to part with. Have you ever bought the moon-eyes type? I work in a body shop, so installation won't be a problem. I was mainly wondering about the quality and fit.
Thanks again |

I've seen them on a few cars and they looked good, although I don't know if the chrome quality is as good as original VW chrome (nothing is though).
As fasr as I know they fit correctly and all the bends are correct. |

I bought a set for my 67 Squareback. They fit ok , however, I wish they came with the pads where the towel meets the original bumper.
The fit is not as good as I would like.
The over riders with the rubber stops fit very well.
Overall I am pleased with the result. I like the look, and for $350.00 you will not find an original set in this condition.
Good luck. |

| I too bought the ones from Moon Eyes. They were pretty easy to install. But as said earlier, the fit between the end edge of the over rider and the bumper needs a gasket of some sort. I kept adjusting mine until I had them as close as possible before I drilled the holes. I also used black electrical tape on the bumper to mark where I was to drill. It really helped holding the drill bit from slipping on the chrome and seemed to hold most of the shavings. Pull the tape off when you are done and Voila !! cleanly drilled hole. Good luck |

Funny. I did the same thing to determine the hole location. I used blue masking tape, traced the area on the tape, then figured on the center.
I was worried about screwing up the new chrome.
It would have been nice if the Moon Eyes / Flat Four guys would have come up with a template.
All in all not hard. Take your time. |

| I agree with you on the template part. For the amount of money that they (Moon eyes) charge, you'd think they would give you instructions and/or a template to make sure you only drill once. I did the ol' measure twice and drill once, although it was more like measure ten times and drill once. I didnt want to purchase a new bumper also!!! |
