I remember doing this. If its similar to the 96 jetta, the alarm is located under the hood up near the firewall below the windshield on the drivers side. Good luck.

were having a similiar isue with our 97 jetta,

is your door lock KEY frozen? ie can you lock/unlock the door with the KEY?
on ours the key tumblers were seized and wouldn't allow the power mechinism to rotate (it has to rotate the key tumbler) and thought the door was locked, so would rearm and lock you inside, then you would exit tripping the alarm and w/o being able to reset it with BOTH key in IGN AND key in door it would shut down for 20 mins till reset.

you have to remove the door handle (T15 bolt in jam) and you can remove the handle and actuate the locks by a screwdriver.

we have to have a new TUMBLER set made so have the handle off in the meantime.. now don't use the key fob to arm/lock as the door mechanism is actually 2 parts and w/o the key piece in place only turns one part, effectively confusing the alarm some more..

hope this helps, it was last nights puzzler before dinner.

Where the wires go from the door to the body in the wrap that is exposed when the door is open... Inside that the insulation on these security system/door lock wires cracks and shorts the wires. Causes TONS of probs. Peel the main wrap off this big harness and look around I bet you find some bare wires. Have seen it lots of times before causing no start, beeping horn, windows freaking out, etc. Hope it helps, post when you find something!
