ALOT depends on what you are using them for. IDF's are mainly used for the street and IDA's are mainly used for the strip.
Depends on what your using them for. |

IDA's are designed as racing carbs to be run at WOT ( wide open throttle)
IDF's were designed for street use on daily driver cars and have a better progression circuit through all throttle positions. |

I had a set of IDFs on my race car for a long time and was running 7.97 in the 1/8 with them. I changed over to IDAs and ran a 7.94. If you are going to run the car on the street I would run IDFs. If its a drag car run IDAs because the IDAs are upgradable and parts are real easy to get your hands on.
Just my opinion |

I have run nothing but 48 IDA single in mid 80's and dual for the rest of my time till today. It takes some getting use to but 48 IDA is fine for the street not for the faint at heart and not for cry babies that complain about the semi rough take off. I have matered that after all these years. Of course there are folks out there that Cheat and get it drilled for 3 progression to make things smoother, but we all can't be hard headed old school.
Go with the 48 IDA and step up to the plate, There is NO substitute for a 48 IDA!!!!! |

I run IDA's on the street with no problems. I had the third progression drilled, and the venturies opened to 40mm from 37mm. |

There are 2 progression circuts by the throttle plate by drilling a third hole it helps make the progression simpler on the carb |

So all you do is drill another hole? That's it, or do you have put something in? Does anyone have a pic or a diagram on how to do this?
thanks |

Not so simple you need to have someone Like ACE or Jaycee do it... |

all street bugs must have a set of 48 IDAs to be a true hot VW. smaller venruris and an added progession circuit will make the IDA very streetable. they flow better etc. Step up to the plate. I personally run 40 Kadrons with with a 280 main jet. on my 3 liter FK89 15 to 1 compresson street engine. they flow better than a 4 sidedraft 28 pcits i ran with alky and a t8 turbo. |

so IDA's are really the way to go right? i am working on building a 2180cc that i would like to have some good performance. do the IDA's really give that big of an improvement over the IDF's? |

if you only want SOME performance then you don't need IDA. You can get good performance 40's and 44's. 48 IDA is for Really High performance and if you are using them on a 2180cc with a W120 cam and 40x35.5 heads you are just wasting your money buying 48's...Give me the specs on your motor...CAM-Heads-Compression and I'll tell you if you are wating the money on 48"s |

Yes this is not something that you use the craftsman drill on... |

Send them to Art Thraen, he's the IDA Guru.

Sounds pretty surreal to me. I'd guess something was lost in the translation. Art is good at carbs. |
