For the past couple of months I have been lurking around these forums putting my two cents in here and there but mostly reading your post and missing the old ’67 I had in high school. The day I sold that car I began to regret it and wanted to buy another bug.
Prior to two weeks ago I considered barn found bugs to be an urban ledgend of sorts. Today however, I am a believer.
About a month and some I contacted Alan Willis regarding some semaphore posts he was selling. I wanted to buy them to go in a bug I was looking to purchase here in the southeast. One conversation led to another and Alan told me of a friend of a friend of a friend who had this solid and complete 60 US spec rag for sale. It had been kept in a barn for the past few years after its second owner had passed away. To make a long story short, yesterday my buddy Ed, my wife and I Uhauled home this awesome piece of Indigo Blue German machinery.
The owner had (prior to his passing) had noticed a small leak in the rag and had screwed a metal plate to the roof. Thus he protected the heater channels and interior from the rain.
Being owner #3 has its distinct advantages, too. Owner #2 had the car since it was two years old. I therefore am in possession of the owner’s manual and the complete OG tool rag.
I also got this cool trash can…
That was made down the road from my parent’s house in upstate South Carolina…
Small world, eh?
Oh well, that’s my brag. Now that I am through boasting, I need to get restoring.
Thanks for your help, Allan.

| I went from where I live in north Florida to central backwoods, 'deep in the holler' South Carolina. It was around a five hour drive oneway. Well worth it though and much closer than SoCal. |

| As I was cleaning out the car this afternoon I could not help but think about the car and what all it has been apart of: tears on the steering wheel when the radio announced Kennedy had been shot, children's laughter from the backseat, a slide back of the rag to look at the moon and think of the astronauts who just landed there, grandchildren sitting on Grandpa's lap to 'drive' down a dusty road, a familiar reach for a smoke from the glove box after the doctor told the PO the lung cancer was spreading and so on. It really gives the car a deeper meaning when you look into its soul and try to find its personallity. |
