| I've noticed for the past month or so that my 85 Jetta Coupe (84 Rabbit motor, with 250,000 kms or so since rebuild) has become extremely gutless. About the same time I noticed that it isn't smoking at all like it used to, leading me to believe it might be a lack of fuel problem. I got my brother to follow me tonight and he said very little smoke was coming out of it and I was really coming onto it. It smoked so bad before that I'd almost lose sight of the car behind me when I came onto it. The wife even noted that other cars seem to be following closer than they used to. Lol. Any ideas? It has a new air filter and the fuel filter is about a year old. The IP has never been touched as long as I've owned it. |

I think the first thing I'd check is if the timing was still correct. If it skipped a tooth it might still run, but poorly. Does it make any difference when you pull the "choke" out? How hard is it to start when the engine is cold?
Checking the timing on Diesels requires some special tools though, you'd need those plus a good manual (Bentley!) to do it. |
