First Attempt: 1972 Super Baja Beetle

To This 1968 Standard - needs too much pan work for my ability

And Now this: 1958 w/2110cc w/ Rancho trans, New pans!

Maybe I will get it right this time - just wish I would have understood that you get what you pay for back in 2004!!!

Thanks fellas. Through all these bugs, sometimes I wonder if all of you 3,000 plus posters(longtimers like Glenn, Obus, Skim, Everett, etc) and your long term love of acvw's evolved the expensive way (like I seem to be experincing), or if you all had mentors to avoid mistakes like mine. Life is often times the most effective teacher, I guess. Even though that super baja was a HUGE POS, at the time, the magic that occurred when I first drove that thing down the street, baja mufflers, kids cheering, jake barking in the passenger seat like his ass was on fire, all of it - completely infected me. All I could do was smile and laugh maniacally. Anyways, I appreciate the info and fellowship here on the site, and look forward to more continued learning and vw madness ......

My Vw learning curve was more like a pretzel !!
I started out w/ a '59 Singlecab in 1980, a bunch of split Buses/trucks followed, then after moving East, I had a string of 70's Buses/Bugs, followed by the dark ages of the '90's, moving into WCVW's, now I'm back around to the split Buses, although I've had one Split or another for 26 years, I now have the time, money & space to work on them .

I totally understand what you are going through. I am on my second vw and it feels like I've spent a fortune trying to keep them going on the road. People have asked me countless times why I continue to put money into the car and then I would give a look similar to this ~~~> and shrugged my shoulders not knowing what kinda answer to give. Then I got involved in a VW club and really started to see the culture behind Vws and realized that I am not the only one that is addicted to these cars. Now I reaalize that the reason I continue to put money into my car is because of the feeling I get while I drive it. There isn't very many other cars on the road that when you see another one on the road they wave, honk, give a piece sign to you as if they know you. Its just a cool feeling

There are some that have a real desire to take a car thats been neglected and turn it into something really nice that they can be proud of...........Then there are some that take a really nice car and turn it into a real piece of.......well you know. I guess i really do not keep track of the money that i spend on a vehicle, because if that vehicle brings me some happiness then its worth every penny.

I totally agree with you on that!

one of the biggest challenges i have had so far is knowing what size project is too much for my capabilities. its tough sometimes out here in pittsburgh - seems like cali has a HUGE acvw following. We have a local club, of which I have joined, and an annual show, but havent really got in the middle of the acvw scene here. am looking to hook up with some local longtimers to learn and gain knowledge, carry on the love. guess in time it will develop...

nice to hear the stories of others!
