| in restoring a early mid 60's type 1 i was wondering if i should rechrome such pieces as trim rings for headlights and dash chrome or to purchase these items new. this car will be a concourse style restoration and will be of very high quality. things like bumpers and handles will be rechromed. what have you done in the past . is it worth it to rechrome trim rings and dash chrome are the after market pieces crap or is it better to save a few bucks and go repro on those items. thanks you all for your answers in advance. |

Rechrome what you can and only replace what is absolutly necessary. OG headlight rings are much, much better than the repops, and the repop dash moldin, Well..... for lack of a better word is "crap". But 1960 dash moldings are aluminum and should most likely be polished and clear annidized(sp?) to be correct. Also try to rechrome and reuse the speedo trim ring as the repop ones are thin and not nearly as nice. Also do yourself a favor and find an NOS or very nice backing plate for your wolfsburg crest as the repops dont fit the contour of the hood the way the OG ones do. And find NOS horn grill, same story, the repops are nothing like the OGs. Rechrome and reuse the taillight rings also. The repop rings keep the lenses from sitting in the hosing the way they should. In my opinion it is the small things like this that make the really great cars stand out from the good ones, along with the more noticeable things like good paint and body, and clean and detailed interior and undercarrage
