I just bought a 93 cabrio at an auction. As Is. It looks good etc but the running part? It looks like the timimg belt recently broke. New Belt with the cover off at auction. I was under the impression that the valves on the 1.8 don't hit but after setting cam timing right, and playing with the ignition timing I got it to run. It will not idle and will not go over 3,000 rpm without backfiring horribly. Just to see I took the belt off the cam gear and tried to rotate the cam shaft 1 revolution. It will not go all the way around. It stops at about 45 degrees either way from tdc. Is the 93 an interference engine???? I can not find a repair manual for either 93 or 94 Cabriolets. Every one I ask don't know
Thanks |

A '93 1.8 should not have interference issues, but you never know the circumstances of the break....was it at idle, or 80mph?
If you look up info on a '94 Cabrio, you will be barking up the wrong tree;(here in the US at least) the Cabrio became Mk3 based for the '94 model year.
Here's the correct repair manual for your '93:
Bentley Publishers' part no. VS93
And here's a good link for purchasing it:

| from experience my friend: just go get a new engine - that one is shot. i got a 86 with a blown transmission- if you are in the SF bay area ill basically give you the engine. if not, then search around and I bet you can find a clean engine and just do the swap- its cheaper than trying to fix it!. you will be happier and your car will thank you! |
