| I have a 71 super beetle and I want add a rag top to it. I know there are after-market companies selling them, but I've heard that they look cheap. A guy locally has the roof clip from a 60 beetle rag that he is selling. Has anyone installed an older rag top clip into their car? How difficult was it? Are there things to look out for? |

| OG Ragtop in a 71 SB? What's next, overrider bumpers and a pope's nose? |

I don't think I've ever seen a super with a rag. Should be interesting.
Here's a link to the article I followed. It's not overly difficult, but cutting a hole in the roof can be scary. Measure, measure, re-measure, then cut it smaller.

Good luck. |

| Thanks for the link AirCooledHead! Excellent article. Do you have a paper-copy of it by any chance? How long did it take you to install? I really appreciate the info. |

I've got the text of the article somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and e-mail.
It took me longer than it should have, since I work slow.
The most important/difficult thing is getting the measurements right. I spent about a third of the time just on measuring, aligning, measure again.
Also, since I was moving it back about 2 inches, I purposely cut the hole smaller, and spent A LOT of time re-measuring and trimming to perfection.
The only advice I'd add is to leave a little more lip on the clip. You can always trim more where needed. When you finish, there's also a VWT article on re-doing the ragtop cover.
Send me your e-mail. |
