Hello, everyone. If you had to choose between Valspar brand paint or PPG, which would be the better choice? Is there a difference in quality between the two? (2-stage, blue/white, price per quantity about the same for me). Thank you for your help. I'll be painting soon.

Whos primer did you use?
There's a system to these things.
Shouldn't Mix-n-Match.

Thanks, ACH, that's a very good point. I guess I'm stuck with Valspar on this project. But, for info on a future paint job, which would be the better choice?

Spies-Hecker is my choice. It's super easy to shoot, very easy system to understand and is hard as a rock when it's cured, best stuff I've ever used. I painted a car with PPG once and I wasn't impressed. Confusing formulas and systems and the paint never got very hard and chipped really easily.

Industrial Finishes. There is one on McGloughlin and one in Beaverton. Good luck.

I went to S-H site and then it directed me to Dupont finishes. That must be their auto paint division?

Dupont produces Spies, or Spies is owned by dupont or something, not real sure, but yeah, I had the same thing happen to me. I think I emailed them actually and they sent me back the name of a local rep who directed me to Industrial Finishes.

That's cool because the color I picked out was in a Dupont color swatch book. What a bonus that it sprays nice. Did you use HVLP gun? What is the least I can pay for a gravity fed HVLP gun and still expect a professional result? I hesitate to buy a 50 buck hvlp from harbor freight tools or something cheap like that.

Thanks

Doug

I don't know that the colors Spies has are the same colors you can get in Dupont products, but I'm sure the paint shop could answer any questions. I painted my car the original color and wanted a really good, german product so I went with Spies. I actually didn't do the paint part of my car. I did all the body work, sprayed the primer and had a friend shoot the color and clear who paints for Freightliner. I did, however, do the wheels and miscellaneous parts myself and used a small syphon detail gun that I got at Harbor Freight and it worked great. I added a filter and had zero problems. I don't know much about guns and don't have much experience with HVLP stuff. Maybe someone else can answer that one. Good luck.

I don't suppose your bud from Freightliner is named russel? Let me know.

So, back to Valspar vs. PPG...any other comments on these two?

Strato56 Sat Feb 22, 2003 1:00 pm

Nope, his name is Dan. Bad experiences with PPG, never used Valspar, I'm sold on Spies.
