I am at the begining stages of body work my T2. The bus has been sitting for quite a while and has some surface rust and some areas of exposed metal where rust is set in a bit deeper but not thought the metal.

Problem is, how do I go about neautralizing the rust in these areas prior to body prep & paint? Sanding the problem areas leaves a smooth finish but there is still a rust "stain" in the metal and will not clean up. Help!

I got a rust preventive product called Ospho for my car that turns iron oxide into iron phosphate that I used on the body of my bug where it was getting painted. It's only been painted for a year, but I haven't had any problems yet. You can probably get it at any paint supply store. POR would be great, but I personally am skeptical about putting it on the roof of a car and then painting over it. I basically dumped it inside the bottoms of my doors and inside the wheel wells where there was a bit of rust to catch it from both sides. I ended up painting over part of it on the bottom of one door and the primer built up a lot, got kinda wavy, etc. It turned out ok, but made me nervous. I would say if it's not an exterior painted surface, coat the crap out of it with POR. If it is use somthing else, but that's just my opinion.
