Something "good and durable, but not too expensive" doesn't exist in my limited experience. You can buy something cheap that will last a couple years, or you can shell out a few extra bucks and make it last 20 years. Industrial Finishes on McGloughlin sells PPG, Spies-Hecker, and probably other brands?? I don't have the number with me, but they are in the phone book. They can hook you up with a good system, might not be "cheap" though.

I strongly strongly agree with Ryan. Industrial Finishes on McLoughlin.
Nothing good is cheap.
I used PPG on my 56 and on other applications. Ryan used Spies on his 56. We both used basecoat/clearcoat systems. Very forgiving and long lasting. Both systems are good. Both of us are happy.

Do they sell any good paint systems for single stage paint? I am not going to use base/clear coat. I am going to use the stuff thats already mixed or whatever.

It depends on the color and the supplier. I know Spies products come only single stage or two stage, depending on the color. For example, the color of my car, Strato Silver, is only available in two stage from Spies, but the color of the inner wheel, Silver White, is only available in single stage. I think PPG might be different, offering your choice of single or two stage? No matter what you have to mix it with hardener/reducer to be able to spray it. You cannot buy a paint, dump it in the spayer and go to work. Just doesn't work that way to get it to harden and gloss correctly. As an aside, Chris, are you the one that emailed me last spring with the rag-top? My car will be on the road again in roughly two weeks I'm hoping!

Slamd67, you aren't going to be able to buy paint that's "already mixed". If you want to do a single stage paintjob, fine, but I'm a bit puzzled at your apparent determination to use the cheapest product possible. Body and paint expense is not really in the paint, it's in the TIME and the prep materials. All auto body paint is expensive.

Yeah Ryan it's me. My oval will NOT be on the road, far from it...but our house will be for sale in three months, so the priority has been finishing that.

I saw Jeff's car at his parents house after he got it back from Dustin's. He was putting the doors back together. Talked to him online a couple times since.

Which of you is going to finish first?? I'd love to see your car when it's done. Shoot me an email--christraciandclaire@attbi.com when you get a chance.

Regards,
Chris

While you can buy expense Dupont Paints or PPG brands you can also buy Western Paint or sikkens cheaper and get the same life out of the paint. The most important factor in paint maitaince is taking care of the paint. Frequent waxing, with a UV protectant wax or polish, making sure you clean your car. Many little things play a major role in how long the paint lasts.
I tested a *new Expensive product* and did not take care of the paint. It only took 2.5 years for the Costly paint to fade and begin to burn. This was including car washes only no wax sealer crap..
Buy what is in your budget. Paint tranparency is a problem of cheaper paint you may need to get more color to paint your ride because of this. The other problem is the clearness of the clear, most clears have a tinge of yellow in them and getting the best will take away the tinge. Most colors you wont even notice that at all.

depending on the color u want, western is good as a base coat dont use the cheap sythetic enamal that stuff was made for mail boxes or water tanks.if u want to use single stage paint ppg is the best. if u still want to go cheaper let one day do it its cheaper than doing it yourself and youll get that same cheap paint look. seperate the paint and the clear youll be much happier wester base color with ppg, dupont,if its avalible sunfire, or transtar. dust is a problem i recommend transtar 2 hour clear coat lays flat and dry in 2-3 hours depending on temp
