Just restored bus about 1 year ago. Sandblasted entire bus and removed all rust (at least I thought I did). Now, I noticed underneath front floor matt on passenger side near door, some rust discoloration. Any recommedations. Thanks.

How did you treat the metal after sandblasting?

j.pikens,
The entire bus was primed. Thanks.

Well, to just stabilize what you have without having to re-do everything, you can use Permatex Extend rust conversion spray can stuff to at least keep it from getting worse. But it sounds like you didn't use a metal prep agent before priming. A more permanent solution is to wire-brush, clean, treat with Resto-Motive lab's Metal Ready, then re-primer and top coat.

Here is a real good site with comparisons of metal rust conversion products:

Oh, another thing. Those rubber floor mats need to be lifted up whenever you drive in the rain to allow you to dry out the floor pans with towels and let dry. I know this is a real pain, but it is the weakest link in the rust progression of buses.

j.pickens,

Thanks, for information. I will try one of those things. I had a professional paint car, so not quite sure of all the procedures he did. It is a long way to get back to him, so I thought there might be something I could do myself. Thanks again.

Surferbus,
Ain't rust a bitch?
I do like the Permatex Extend spray, though.
It turns the rust black almost immediately, and you get the feeling that at least you are keeping the iron oxide at bay.

I am going with 2 part epoxy sealer before priming, sanding, sealing and top coat. Shouldn't an epoxy barrier coat make water lying on top of the paint moot?

Water lying on top of painted metal panels will eventually cause rust, no matter what you do. Your multi-layer system should last a long time though. Be sure that all your products are compatible and recommended to be used together.
