I've got a 1972 1200 Bug and a big bonnet problem. The air grill on the top of the bonnet doesn't just let air in, but water as well! Whenever it rains, as it does frequently in sunny old Britain, water collects under the bonnet. I have to go out every other day and dry it out to avoid rot and rust. Anyway, what I would like to know, if anyone can help me, is if this is a common problem and how to solve it? Does my bug even have the right bonnet on it?
Thanks for your time, Andy |

| I have the same problem on my 1970. But i know why mine is that way... I dont have the fresh air box that is supposed to fit right under the air vent in the hood(bonnet). If u have this box u shouldnt have a problem. |

You don't just need the plastic fresh air box, there is also a drain line which is notorious for coming unhooked. Overall, it is a real bad design, the beginning of the end for the beetle. There is a plastic elbow at the bottom of the box which also has a tab with a hole for mounting the assembly to a threaded stud on a support mounted to the floor of the "boot" or trunk area. Problem is, when people try to install or fix a radio, windshield wiper motor, or any one of the other dashboard components, you have to dissassemble the nut on the stud and carefully remove the drain line to keep it from breaking off.
To add insult to injury, you have to carefully re-install all this stuff to prevent breakage and leakage. |
