Im doing some research for my next project and was wondering if anyone could help. I'm going to Hot-Rod a bug, remove the wings, drop the roof and so on. What I need to know is if it would be street legal in the U.K? Any ideas?

In this country, no vehicle WITH wings on it would be allowed on public roads. Unless they somehow folded up and then you flipped them down again when you needed to prepare for takeoff.

| On that note you would have to be able to turn off the lights on the wings as red and green lights would likely get you in trouble flying down the highway/autobahn/or what have you. |

| Over here each state has its own regulations on fenders / wings and everything else. Don't know if UK has a uniform code for all vehicles or whether it is up to local authorities. All I can say is in New York and New Jersey I have not in all my life seen an automobile of any kind in regular road use without fenders on it. Even the Chrysler Prowler has rudimentary fenders on it. |

The only cars that seem to get by are the Hot Rod crowd (cops will stop them just to check out the ride). They do bust the homies with the wheel extenders and curb-feelers if they don't have a mud flap or fender covering the wheel in back (and of course the homies use chrome mud flaps)

Andy, you seem to have a great sense of humor. Thanks for putting up with our airplane comments. Eventually someone from the land of tea and crumpets will see this thread and answer.
Over here we have local offices of the department of motor vehicles that we can just call and ask these questions to. If I wanted a definitive answer on the fenders/wings, I would call them and record the conversation before I started hacking up my poor defenseless bug on the advice of some anonymous internet user.
Cheers! |
