a friend of my dad is going to paint my 67 bug. He told me to buy some sealer, and spray that on, instead of just spraying the actual paint over rattle can primer. Should I buy the sealer and spray it with the air gun, or would it be ok to just primer the whole car with rattle can primer. I think i am going to paint it with single stage paint, and im not trying to get a show qaulity paint job, just something respectable. I am painting the interior, and exterior including under decklid and hood. He said that if we use rattle can primer instead of sealer, that the paint MIGHT bleed through. He has only painted one car, so im not really sure what to do. please, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

| Do what he says. He is actually not giving you the worst case scenario. |

| no, it's not absolutely necessary. you can always hope for the best, try to save some money, and then spend it on sand paper and more paint to redo the sections that bleed.. cuz you WILL get bleed through. (Murphy's law #27 of auto resto- every cost cutting measure will cost you more than doing it right, because of Murphy's law #1- if it CAN go wrong, it will.)Your dad's friend is right. You may not get good coverage with the rattle can primer, so your new paint will react with the old paint, especially if it is original paint. Also, the paint you spray may even react with the rattle can primer. sealant should solve both problems, and it is a cheap investment. |

Frankly I would be surprised if the finish coat DIDN'T react to rattle can primer by causing the primer to pucker and lift. Totally different products with different thinners and shrink rates. The top coat has to be compatible with the last coat of primer.
Auto paint is expensive. I respect being on a budget but EVEN MAACO USES PRIMER.
If that shit doesn't convince you, nothing will. |

to be completely honest with you, your gonna have more problems with your paint if you keep the rattle can primer on the car. Try and DA (sand) as much of that rattle can primer off as possible. Use some 240-320 grit paper wet if you want. then hit it up with some 600 before you have the sealer sprayed on the car.
YOU WILL NOT WANT RATTLE CAN PRIMER ON YOUR RIDE. IT WILL FLAKE< SHRINK, DESTROY your top coat. |
