I'm about to dive into my 71 std. in prep for paint. It's going to be a daily driver so I'm not overly concerned about show quality. When I restored my 65 (it is show quality) I struggled with achieving a clean transition from filler to parent metal. It would look great, feel fine, but I'd see a line after applying the top coat. I stripped and repainted one door 4 times. Does anyone have a tip on how to get that seemless transition. Thanks

Did you use a high-build/ high solids primer? Dont use the high build primer in a can....proper stuff needs hardener. PPG has a rollable primer that works wonders.

I used all PPG material and only used the filler as a way of smoothing out the hammer and dolly work. I stripped the car to bare metal using a DA sander. All primer was multi-part. Don't remember if it was high build / high solid. The paint store sold me a polyester style finsh filler that was supposed to help but didn't do much. If I understand correctly the primer is what achieves the transition? Just build and sand until its smooth? Thanks

After you have put high build primer on, block the area sanding from the metal area to the filler. Make sense??

Think of it like this- if you dig a hole in your back yard, and fill it with gravel, you will be able to still see where the hole was. Even after you toss on some grass seed, you will still know where the hole was, because there isn't a smooth transition from the gravel to the surrounding lawn. Lay a layer of sand over the hole, and the whole surface looks smoother and more level, and you can no longer tell where your grass ends and gravel begins. The high build primers are like that sand. of course, if you are like me and live in the east, your lawn doesn't mean shit right now, cuz it is covered in 11 feet of friggin' snow.

What do we do if the birds eat the grass sead off of our cars? Maybe I am confused.
