I want to put the stock tail lights on my 1957 Single Cab. In its past it aquired some '62 and newer tail lights, so i have these great big holes... The body & fender guy recommended I buy a couple new corners and he'd weld 'em in.
OK
I go to Wolfburg West's site and in the sheetmeatl section I see a part tagged #27 in the exploded view of the back end of a bus.
I follow up to the next page and I see the photo of it and it just doesn't look quite the same. Is it me? Am I looking at the right part?
I'm open to other sources... I have a little rust goin' on so replacing the whole corner makes sense as opposed to just welding in a little square where the tail light is.

Truck corners are more squared at the corners to join up with the pickup bed.
Think twice before replacing the corners. Whatever corner you find will require modification to fit the 1957 taillights so you'll have the same expense modifing them as you will fixing the holes you have so there's no savings there. If your existing corners are at all sound I think it would be cheaper to salvage the ones you have.
I replaced both of mine and I wish I had worked harder to save the originals. The replacements are a bitch to fit and you have to do all sorts of things inside with the battery tray (replacements are not availalbe for trucks). |

I'm beginning to think the degree of repair efforts mandated by some 'experts' is taking the fun out of this truck!
I don't want it to rust into dust and I'm not enamored with bondo, but I'm not building a museum candidate, I just want to clean it up and paint it colors I like...and it should have most of its original stuff is all.
I think I will strip some paint off myself and have a look at what is lurking beneath.
I have a hot glue gun, watch out here comes a new era of repair tips...
(just kidding)

If all you have is bigger holes but the corners are otherwise straight, correcting the taillight holes is WAY less work than replacing the entire corners. No brainer!

That seriously sounds like a project you should try to undertake yourself.
If you're not going for OG restoration then by all means start poking around and find out what you really need to replace. Then replace it yourself, borrow a MIG for beers an aircompressor for sexual favours, paint gun for ????????.
I'm onto the second year of my '59 standard restoration and I wouldn't have it any other way. |
