looks like the prudent thing to do is put the carbs back on, again. one of these days the turbo will get to stay put! really... i swear!

Why not finish the turbo install? It's supposed to be a "street set up" isn't it? I mean you can't fine tune it, adjust it, if you're not driving it.

the idea of this as a driver was not 25 mile freeway runs over the big hill, but i guess i can try it and see if it is really going to be a true daily or just an around town weekend warrior.

a beam switch out takes all of like 2 hours... you have one laying around?

Notched Wed Feb 22, 2012 2:21 pm

Extra beam??

vwfye Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:20 pm

Beams I have... but that still doesn't solve my problem on the other car guys. No worries, solutions are in the works.

Alright, finally finished building the waste gate dump pipe for the turbo today! Now I just need to paint it. Once it is in, I have to mount my guide wheel for the throttle cable and reinstall the carb. Oh... need to run the line for the boost gauge too.

vwfye Sun Mar 04, 2012 7:20 pm

just need to hook up the oil lines from the breather to the case and valve covers, put in the boost gauge, hook the distributor wires up (compufire), and hook up the throttle cable before I can test fire again.

vwfye Mon Mar 05, 2012 9:10 am

it looks like some of the reconfiguration will allow me to shut the deck lid with a 3" air filter! this makes me happy!!! 8)

vwfye Mon Mar 05, 2012 10:23 pm

Finally time to test the fuel lines for leak, hook up the breather and connect the boost gauge... if there are no intake leaks, this thing should rock!

turbo blanket should be here Monday. Gots to save the paint on the trunk lid!

You mean you're not going to cut a hole in the trunk lid, and weld in a ghia grill vent strip.
Why not just remove the lid, so you can do more road testing until the blanky arrives.

Better yet- glue a sound and heat shield to the inside of the boot.

vwfye Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:01 pm

the turbo blanket is a heat shield...

i was asked on another forum what i was going to do IF there is too much heat trapped in the engine bay to prevent cool air from the carb. that's where I said I might have to cut on the trunk lid for a scoop. this trunk lid is full of bondo, so it would be the one to cut.

Why not just draw the carb air from where the factory did?

vwfye Tue Mar 06, 2012 11:04 pm

did you look at the photo? there are a couple things fighting that. the carb is on the opposite side of the engine bay and I don't think a forced feed from that feed will support 700 cfm. I thought about it, but I just think it is too small...

Might be! What do I know about modded engines?

I thought you could roll some metal to enclose that air cleaner and run a snorkel. Maybe not.

How much heat will that turbo actually generate? It's not like it's running constantly.

vwfye Tue Mar 06, 2012 11:15 pm

that's the 64 dollar question! i will do some temp checks after it is running well, and if i need to vent the air cleaner to the atmosphere, i will.

Ran the fuel pump tonight... no fuel leaks to be found! Installed the LM-1 oxy sensor as well. Next is static timing the engine, running the boost gauge line to the dash and running the LM-1 wiring up to the front. Then... hopefully a BOOM of the good type this Saturday!

vwfye Wed Mar 07, 2012 10:59 pm

Tomnotch and Neil...
hold on to your hats! The car fired up and ran tonight  I only fired it off for about 30 seconds as the garage is closed up. It caught and held an 800rpm idle and then I shut it off. Now I can work on getting it tuned this Saturday when I have some time and the car is out of the garage :!:
